Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Rosle Right-Handed Swivel PeelerCustomer Review: expensive but worth it Summary: 5 Stars
About a year ago I bought a similar looking Kuhn-Rikon peeler and was disappointed in it (I note that amazon no longer sells that K-R product). So I was apprehensive about the Rosle peeler even though others had given it high marks. But not to worry; this peeler is a real tool and designed quite differently than any other I've seen. First off, as others have noted, the blade is replaceable (current cost $6 including 2 new screws). Secondly, the blade itself swings in a much shorter arc than other swivel types which prevents the blade from hanging up on the peeler frame which was the main problem with the Kuhn-Rikon. The blade is very sharp and cleanly peels raw tomatoes with ease (my acid test). As others have noted you have to make a decision re: the LH/RH choice and will necessitate most cooks making some adjustment in their technique. For example most people peel an apple towards you while peeling a carrot away, it's a fat/round vs. long/skinny thing. But this peeler is so smooth that the adjustment is easy and it's beautifully designed and manufactured.... looks more like a surgical instrument than a kitchen gadget.
The only other thing for those that are interested is it's made in China. The euro manufacturers are not immune from the lure of cheap labor and have quietly (compared to US standards) moved much of their manufacturing offshore to Asia. The difference is they do their best to hide it with code words touting "German design" or "Swiss engineered and designed". Even the venerable French firm Le Creuset has much of their production (not the enameled cast iron) manufactured in China. The major difference seems to be that these euro firms often continue parallel manufacturing in their home markets, so an identical product might be purchased in Munich or Lyon and come from an EU plant while the rest of the world might get the Chinese version. Really not an issue unless one feels sending US dollars to one foreign country is OK while sending it to another is not.
Description of Rosle Right-Handed Swivel PeelerRosle Swivel Peeler right-handed One of Rösle's superb kitchen tools, this 7-1/2-inch fruit and vegetable peeler has a swivel blade for easily peeling fruits and vegetables and is designed for left-handers who peel toward their bodies. (Left-handers who customarily peel away from their bodies should use Rösle's right-handed swivel peeler.) Opposite the blade is a point sharpened on both sides to remove potato eyes and other blemishes. Like all Rösle tools, utensils, and Open Kitchen storage components, this peeler is made of 18/10 stainless steel for rustproof beauty and long-lasting durability. The round handle has a satin finish to conceal finger marks. The handle is sealed against water and has a hanging ring so it can be conveniently stored on a hook in the Open Kitchen system of Rösle basic rails and Gridwalls or hung on any hook or peg. The peeler is sturdy, balanced, and exceptionally comfortable in the hand. All Rösle products are dishwasher-safe, and carry a lifetime warranty against defects. --Fred Brack
