Customer Review: Buy a nice knife instead

After owning one of these for about 2 years, I feel qualified to write a review on it.
First the good:
It is convenient for chopping onions, and pretty fun to use the first few times.
Now the bad:
First, it's small. Chopping a whole onion requires first cutting the onion into quarters so it will fit into the chopping area. If I am going to get a chopping board and knife dirty to prep the onion, why should I bother using this at all?
Second, after a few washes it becomes incredibly difficult to put back together. We've never put it in the dishwasher, but somehow the black plastic under-piece managed to become warped, which means the blades do not line up quite right. It can be put back together, but it takes a lot of finesse.
Third, and this is the reason I decided to write this review, is that the blades do become dull after a while (like any sharp blade will do). The problem is that due to the curvature of the blade and the awkward moving handle it is very difficult to sharpen. I tried to sharpen the blade with a standard knife sharpener, slipped, and managed to put a huge gash in my finger on the other end of the chopper blade. Sharpening is required, because eventually it will not slice through anything, which makes it worthless.
Due to the difficulty of putting it back together, and the fact that it has a limited useful lifespan (unless you're willing to risk cutting yourself sharpening it), I would not recommend this product. After a year or two you are going to need to replace it, and for the cost of two of these you could buy an extremely nice knife such as the Wusthof Classic Santoku (our favorite knife) which will last you a lifetime.
Save your money, ignore this product, and buy something that will last longer, take up less space, and be useful for many different things.
