Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Rösle 12738 Cheese PlaneCustomer Review: Going in my next yard sale Summary: 1 Stars
I got sucked in by the reviews and the beauty of the stainless steel. But, this cheese plane is a joke if you have ever used a Spar made in Norway. And, by the way, the Norwegians invented the cheese plane. They have forgotten more about making cheese planes than anyone else will ever know. I should have gotten a Spar and that is what I will do.
Why would anyone want to serve raggedy cheese to a guest with this serrated blade? Didn't realize it was serrated when I ordered it. And if the blade on the plane is sharp enough you don't need a serrated edge anyway. I tried this on hard and soft cheese and was not pleased with the presentation of any of them.
I am replacing a 40 year old cheese plane that has a damaged handle and can't be repaired. I thought maybe this Rosle was the one, but it doesn't slice off thin wisps of cheese that you can almost see through. Increase the pressure on my old cheese plane and it slices a nice thin piece, not a hunk or something that looks like it came through a grinder.
I gave it one star because I liked the handle. Too bad it won't fit on my old plane.
Description of Rösle 12738 Cheese PlaneIt's easy to get thin slices with the 9.25-in. Cheese Slicer by Rosle. Sturdy stainless steel construction features a stable wedge/blade surface. Sharp cutting edge works well with medium-hard and hard cheeses, such as Cheddar, Parmesan and Romano. Comfortable, watertight handle has a convenient hanging loop. One of Rösle's superb kitchen tools, this 9-1/2-inch cheese plane properly serves firm cheeses like cheddar, aged Gouda, Swiss, and jack. It's shaped something like a spatula, although with a blade in its center. Drawn across a block of cheese it neatly peels off a thin slice. The spatula part then lifts a slice and places it on a plate, cracker, or toast. Like all Rösle tools, utensils, and Open Kitchen storage components, the cheese plane is made of 18/10 stainless steel for rustproof beauty and long-lasting durability. The round handle has a satin finish to conceal finger marks. The handle is sealed against water and has a hanging ring so the cheese plane can be conveniently stored on a hook in the Open Kitchen system of Rösle basic rails and Gridwalls or hung on any hook or peg. The cheese plane is sturdy, balanced, and exceptionally comfortable in the hand. All Rösle products are dishwasher-safe, and carry a lifetime warranty against defects. --Fred Brack
