Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Rival SD165 6-Quart Dutch Oven SkilletCustomer Review: Very nice skillet but ... Summary: 4 Stars
This skillet is excellent when it is new. The temperature seems constant, and the capacity is great. However, with age (mine is now about 4 years old), the temperature is inconsistent and the non-stick coating is seperating from the bottom of the pan.
We have always hand washed the skillet, using a dish cloth or sponge, and despite special care with utensils etc., the pan is now unusable because of the flaking teflon.
The manufacturer claims this is a result of harsh detergents, and somehow I don't think Joy dish soap falls in that category.
Again, great when new, ages poorly.
Description of Rival SD165 6-Quart Dutch Oven SkilletRival 6 Quart Oval Deep Dutch Oven In addition to all the usual dishes an electric skillet is great for--pancakes, egg dishes, all kinds of sautes--this deep pan is big and sturdy enough for braising dishes like chicken fricassee or even roasted game hens. Sensitive temperature control means a boil can reduce to a simmer in seconds, much like cooking over a gas burner. The dial reads in degrees like the dial of an oven; "simmer" and "auto-fry" are marked, and the 300-degree mark is equivalent to medium, a good heat for pan frying. A glass lid shows what's cooking without having to remove the lid. Both the interior and exterior of the pan are coated with a Dupont Teflon nonstick surface; to avoid scratching it, wooden and nylon utensils are best (a wooden spatula and a pair of chopsticks for frying are included). The pan is fully immersible after removing the temperature control probe, so clean-up takes only a few quick swipes of a warm, soapy sponge. (Nylon scrubbers only; steel wool will scratch the nonstick finish). The cooking surface of the skillet is 13 by 9 by 3-1/2 inches; the actual dimensions of the appliance, including handles and legs, are 21-1/2 by 12 by 5 inches. Rival provides a limited warranty against defects in material and workmanship under normal use conditions. --Garland Withers
