Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Rival 8550-X 5-Quart Wooden Electric Ice Cream Maker

Customer Review: Badly engineered
Summary: 1 Stars

As several others have stated this thing is pure junk. The bucket did leak and the instructions do advise to soak it ahead of time. Thats crazy. The process requires melted ice water to fill the bucket to transfer the cold and also to prevent the ice from freezing to the inner metal can. It will not freeze correctly with out it (also in the instructions)

BUT... my main gripe is the poor design of the paddle to socket connection. The paddle shaft is aluminum and mine (like several others here) stripped out on the very first use as the connection is too short to properlly engage the scocket. The result was metal shavings from the rounded off shaft in the ice cream and hard freeze around the outside with liquid in the center as the paddle was stuck.

I did follow all supplied instructions. This is simply a poorly designed product. If I could give it 0 stars I would!

Customer Review: Worked well for the first few batches
Summary: 2 Stars

I was so pissed at this maker the other day, I visualized myself kicking it down my front yard! I've made ice cream for several years and have tried several makers. This one was reasonably priced and a brand that I was familiar with. It worked fine for the first few batches but the last two times, it's been terrible. The last batch that I made (I thought was frozen well), then I opened the canister and it was not. I finished it up in my Cuisinart freezer Cuisinart ICE-20 Automatic 1-1/2-Quart Ice-Cream Maker, White (which works wonderfully but it just makes 1.5 quarts per batch). I purchased two of these and they both have problems, so it doesn't seem to just be an occasional flaw. Don't buy it!

Customer Review: Not bad for the money.
Summary: 3 Stars

I purchased this ice cream freezer about 3 months ago, and have made 10 batches of ice cream. Everything has worked as advertised, except one time when the dash slipped out of the slot it fits in and the ice cream was frozen only around the sides of the can. The machine ran for 45 minutes, and I finally just shut it down. I wish that the motor was a bit stronger so that the ice cream would freeze a little harder. It seems to stop too soon for me. I am worried that the dash problem may come back to haunt me, but for now it is working. I do have to pay close attention to everything being down and tight in the bucket.

One other thing; Forget about the recipes for vanilla that come with the maker. The old fashioned vanilla recipe is horrible. Use your own recipe.

Customer Review: Works great-bucket leaks
Summary: 4 Stars

This is my second rival freezer. Everything works great on mine. You must put enough salt and ice to get the ice to melting. The salt causes the ice to be much colder causing your ice cream to freeze evenly. Ive never had a problem with inconsistancy within the freezer. Sometimes the freezer will stop prematurely due to ice or salt jamming the can but can be fixed by unplugging and manually turning until free. Never had a problem with metal shavings in ice cream -you must make sure the motor fits well before fastening down to the freezer. Overall I give this a four star rating due to the wood leaks( I always put my freezer in a dishpan to catch the water). Has never failed to make excellent creamy ice cream -firmly frozen!! For the price I love mine

Customer Review: Poor product design.....faulty machine.
Summary: 1 Stars

Hi Everyone....I like many others bought a piece of junk. However...I did not read the reviews. I just saw I and bought it. My father wanted one.

We tried it and followed the instructions. We had the sme problems listed in many of the reviews. Metal shavings, not contack being made...you name it...faulty machine.

I called rival for their help. There response to me was that they do not honour the warranty for purchases made on amason and ebay. The lady at rival said I would have to buy back the motor. We are not spending anymore money on this unit.

My father decided to work on the bucket to lower the motor. We are trying again to churn the ice cream.

I also do not recommend this product.
