Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Rival 4071-WN 32-Ounce Hot Pot Express, White

Customer Review: Note to manufacturer....Defective heating element
Summary: 2 Stars

I bought a Rival hot pot almost 10 years ago from QVC and it was a great product. it wasvery well made with thick plastic and was very well constructed, unlike the one in the picture. I recently bought a replacement for it from Target. It did not have the Rival name on it but it looks exactly like the one in the picture and it has what I assume is Targets brand (Chefmate)on it. This item heats great but I have noticed that it will inadvertantly cut off and after several uses the large round heating element inside the pot will separate from the plastic, surrounding it, resulting in leakage from the bottom of the pot. This is a defect that needs to be corrected before a serious incident results from what is an obvious design flaw. How it got past quality control is a curiosity. obviously this product is a result of someone making a decision to cut cost by making an inferior product. Tsk, tsk.

Customer Review: I love this pot!
Summary: 5 Stars

I got this pot during a kitchen remodel when we were without a stove or water for a week. I was desperate for tea, and I had given up on the contractors ever being done. I got this little pot, and it was a gift from God. It heated the water so fast, and that first cup of tea was so good. They of course finished the kitchen two days later, but I haven't stopped using this pot. I gave up my stove top kettle for it. I use it once or twice every day.

I also love that you can open up the entire thing and clean it. I had an electric kettle before, and the only opening was the spout. You couldn't clean it, and after storage you had to wonder if a spider might have crawled in there! This pot opens all the way, and you can clean it up. There is no funny taste at all, and after using it solid for 4 months I can say it was well worth how little it cost.

Customer Review: Heats Water Quickly, but...
Summary: 4 Stars

I am a tea junkie, and this pot is invaluable at work. We can heat many cups of water quickly, instead of microwaving them. It is also easy to clean, lightweight, and economical.

However, if I could, I would change two things about this product.
1) It has no on-off switch. You have to unplug it to turn it off. I'm afraid that one day I will forget and burn the office down.
2) Something is wrong with shape of the spout, I don't know what it is. When the water is boiling, and you pour it out, it spills all down the side of the pot and makes a mess. I know that molecular attraction causes cohesion whenever you pour water out of anything, but this is extreme, and does not occur when you pour cold water out of this pot. I have no idea how to fix it, I just know it is annoying.

Customer Review: Adequate
Summary: 3 Stars

I purchased this kettle from Amazon since it was on the order of $10 and I was on a tight budget.

I must say that for its purpose, this little kettle definitely works well if all you want to do is boil water and/or warm up liquids. It heats water up in times fairly quickly in an amount of time you won't really notice.

However, I must say that this kettle only meets your bare minimum requirements. The kettle has a short chord, which means you need to have an extension chord / wall socket nearby. This means your table can't be too far (or too high) from a power source. Furthermore, the kettle is made of plastic which feels cheap-ish and flimsy; I'm not even sure if the plastic was meant to withstand boiling water and not melt slightly. Just something that bothers me.

Customer Review: Great little kettle!
Summary: 4 Stars

I inherited a Rival hot water pot from my older brother that he had used for years during college. It still works great. If you crank it up to the highest setting it will heat a full pot to boiling in under 3 minutes, and you can adjust the temperature down to a low simmer if you want to keep the water hot for a while. The one drawback is that you have to plug and unplug the kettle to turn it on and there's no automatic shut-off, which could be annoying if you use it all the time or forget that you've left it on. Some of the more expensive kettles (like the Braun Express Electric Water Kettles) have automatic shut-offs and manual on/off buttons, but they are also about five times the price of the Rival. For light, occasional use, this little kettle perfect for my purposes.
