Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Rival 4071-WN 32-Ounce Hot Pot Express, WhiteCustomer Review: I wanted to love you so much... Summary: 2 Stars
STAY AWAY FROM THIS KETTLE. and I don't say that lightly: in fact, I was happy when I got it as a going-away present for college this year, but after the first THREE uses or so, it began to decay in stages:
first, the water I boiled had a chalky plastic residue that i could taste MORE STRONGLY than the tea i made with it.
after awhile, the chalk disappeared, but the first layer of the burner started to peel up into my water!!! you can imagine how fun it is picking out little chips of metal from your drinks every time, it's quite unappetizing.
When the first layer had finally all chipped off and I thought my troubles were over, THE SECOND LAYER started peeling up!! I'm no tea snob, don't get me wrong, but this kettle is just disgusting and heinous. I asked my friend down the hall with the same kettle to show me hers, and she lifted the lid to show me a completely burned away and rusted bottom. horrid.
bottom line: while this kettle may be cute as a button, THE WATER IS UNDRINKABLE/INEDIBLE. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS PRODUCT.
Customer Review: Great pot for office and travel Summary: 5 Stars
This pot works very well for simple heating in a location where you don't have a stove, such as an office, hotel room or dorm. I have used it to boil water and to prepare boiled eggs. It can also be used to heat liquid items. I plan to use it primarily for hotel travel.
The heat settings range from low to high. As others note, it doesn't have an off switch; you must unplug it from the outlet. I haven't found this to be a problem, as it boils extremely fast. Thus, it is a quick-heating device, not something you plug in and walk away from and possibly forget.
The device is plastic or polyethylene with a silverstone metal plate on the bottom. I have not had a problem either with plastic taste or with the coating peeling off with normal use. It is easily cleaned by sponging out the inside with a coating-safe sponge or nylon pad, then filling with water and emptying without submerging the whole unit in water. Overall, I have found it to be extremely convenient for heating liquids quickly.
Customer Review: You get what you pay for Summary: 2 Stars
Cheap, cheap, cheap... I searched all over looking for a decent hot pot and concluded that one does not exist. I was willing to spend a little extra for a quality hot pot, but I couldn't find one. I settled for this one, mostly because of the brand name.
The so-called non-stick plate in the bottom is actually quite sticky. If I cook any kind of noodles, many of them will stick to the bottom, making clean-up a pain.
The temperature setting is utterly useless. The temperature of the heating plate is not variable! It's either on or off, so the temperature setting acts like the thermostat for your furnace. Even when set to the hottest setting, my hot pot will itermittently turn on and off. So frustrating! It is not possible to continuously boil water! The water will boil for 10 seconds, then it will shut off for 5 seconds, then boil for 10 seconds...
What a piece of junk. I wish I could recommend a better hot pot, but I have yet to find one and I'm losing hope...
Customer Review: Works great for the price Summary: 4 Stars
I bought the Rival 4071WN 32-Ounce Hot Pot Express to use in my dorm room, and it does exactly what I need it to do. It's great for heating up water (to about boiling temperature) for coffee singles, tea, instant soups, etc. I've even cooked carrots in it, though it takes a while. You're not limited to heating just water either--as long as you're willing to clean up afterwards. The pot heats water very quickly too. When I'm running late in the mornings, I can count on hot water to brew a cup of coffee in under a minute usually. There are a couple of downsides to the product. First, there is no power button nor an automatic shut off. I made the mistake of leaving it plugged in and my room smelled like burned ramen for a day or so. Also, the lid is tricky sometimes, and the only surefire way I am able to open it is by pushing in near the spout where the hot steam is coming out. As long as you are not careless when using the pot, I recommend this product, especially at this price.
Customer Review: Worth the money... I think Summary: 3 Stars
The idea sounds just about perfect, and I haven't had any problems with the actual water heating so far, but I've noticed a couple of potential safety issues -- didn't see anybody else mention them.
-I left a couple inches of water in the hot pot for a few days without using it; when I came back, there was a fairly thick layer of rust all around the metal heating plate. It mostly came off after I boiled some water (and threw it out, obvs) and wiped it out with a dishcloth. It's still not totally gone.
-The cord is so short that almost every time I go to fill up the pot from the sink, the plug falls in! I'm sure this is something I'll get used to -- I'm used to a stable base with removable pot -- but it keeps bringing up safety concerns.
In general, I would have preferred something a little more sophisticated but bought this because of the price. You really do get what you pay for.
