Customer Review: Essential for syrah/shiraz lovers

Syrah is my favorite red (shiraz is the same grape, just a different spelling). I held off buying these glasses for a while, making do with other styles and shapes. Now that I have them, I feel complete. Syrah has such big, fruity aromas, it really needs a large glass. Still, a tapered mouth piece is essential, because Syrah tends towards the more delicate berry fruits, rather than the richer stone fruits like the plum notes in Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. These glasses are perfect, especially for capturing the aroma. Syrah also has some of the most beautifully colored legs of any wine (I know they don't contribute to flavor, but they are fun to look at), so it's nice to have a long bowl to appreciate their full display. Say what you want about Riedel, no one makes a better glass, and this is one of the highlights of my collection.

These Riedel Vinum Syrah glasses, an integral part of the ever-popular Vinum collection, were designed to highlight the tannins in wines made from the Australian Shiraz variety of grape, such as Amarone, Blaufränkisch, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Grenache, Hermitage Rouge, Malbec, Mourvèdre, Pinotage, Shiraz, and Syrah. Introduced in 1986, the Riedel Vinum line was the first machine-made series of glasses in history to be based exclusively on the characteristics of grape varietals. The Vinum series has had a strong and permanent impact on the wine glass culture around the globe. These glasses have proven to consumers and restauranteurs that the pleasure of consuming wines starts with the glass. Developed by 10th generation Georg Riedel on the principle that the contents commands the shape, Vinum is great for everyday use. These glasses are made with over 24% lead crystal.Renowned Austrian glassmaker Riedel designs the shape of each glass to most fully enhance the appreciation of the wine within. The Syrah glass is tall and deep to capture the luscious fruity aroma of dark purple Syrah, or Shiraz, as it's known in Australia, and to highlight the tannins. Beautifully balanced and with just the right mixture of delicacy and stability, each glass stands 9-1/4 inches tall and holds 22-7/8 ounces. This set of two makes a superb wedding gift or adds to an existing collection for the serious wine drinker.
Comprised of more than 24 percent lead crystal for superb brilliance and clarity, Vinum wine glasses are nevertheless affordable because they are machine-made rather than mouth-blown. Riedel introduced the popular Vinum line in 1986, and this particular glass in 1995. While all Vinum glassware is dishwasher-safe, Riedel recommends washing the crystal by hand to prevent detergent residue that can affect wine taste. --Ann Bieri
