Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Riedel Ouverture Magnum Glasses, Set of 4Customer Review: Superb for the price Summary: 5 Stars
I bought a set of the RO Magnum glasses along with a set of the RO Beer glasses just to see if there was much difference between the smaller (12oz and 8oz) wine glasses we had, and the conventional beer glasses I have. In both cases the answer is a definite yes. I am highly delighted with both the wine and beer glasses. I have been so happy with them that I bought another 16 this week from Bed Bath and Beyond where they sell for just $24/4 glasses.
If you are not going to buy one of each of Riedel's expensive varietal glasses then you should just buy a nice general purpose glass and the Ouverture Magnum fits this bill perfectly. It is priced so that you can buy a dozen or so without breaking the bank and so share the wine tasting experience with multiple friends. If you have ever watched wine tasting on TV they use glasses that look like the Magnum, or maybe the Vinum Burgundy (21oz and shaped like the Magnum).
I use mine with reds and whites because they give a load of swirling space, but you could look at the Ouverture 12oz if you are after a smaller white glass. I've found our 8oz glasses are a little too small for swirling. If you want to spend more than twice as much, take a look at the Vinum Burgundy which is even bigger than the Magnum. You have to remember, however, that the Vinum are lead crystal which means hand washing and the risk of lead in your diet.
Description of Riedel Ouverture Magnum Glasses, Set of 4Introduced in 1989, Riedel's Ouverture collection is an uncomplicated beginner series for customers who appreciate good, reasonably priced wine. You needn't have an encyclopedic knowledge of varietals or wine-growing regions to appreciate this fine stemware. Perfect for everyday use, the four extra-large red-wine glasses in this set are part of the moderately priced Ouverture series offered by world-renowned Austrian wineglass maker Riedel Crystal (founded in 1756). Being lead-free, they're not crystal like Riedel's premium glasses but are machine blown of potash glass and are dishwasher-safe. Their thin rims are cut and polished to Riedel's exacting standards, so wine flows easily onto the tongue. Each glass holds 18-5/8 ounces and stands 7-7/8 inches high, and their large bowls help release a wine's aroma, concentrating it in the narrower tops for full enjoyment. Though glasses shaped and sized for different types of wine seem commonplace today, when Riedel introduced this idea in 1961, it was revolutionary. Since then Riedel has continued fine-tuning glasses to bring out the best characteristics in wines and spirits. Varying bowls' shapes and sizes affects the position of the head when sipping and where wine first contacts the tongue's various taste zones. --Fred Brack
