Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Revere 3-1/2-Quart Copper Bottom Teakettle

Customer Review: Nice design, works well. Biggest concern is: Will it last?
Summary: 2 Stars

The first thing that struck me when I removed this kettle from its package was how light it was. I bought this to replace a very similar Revere whistling tea kettle that was probably 30 or 40 years old and had finally begun to leak around the bottom seam. The change in quality over the years really became apparent in an instant.

Another thing that surprised me was how flimsy the plastic "trigger" is that operates the lid. It easily bends in normal operation and use. It works fine, but I really question how it will hold up.

As far as its performance so far, it is great. It boils water quickly and even though the loudness of the whistle is somewhat variable, and depends on how the lid is seated after filling, it is loud and noticeable enough. Pouring the hot water was no problem, free from drips and dribbles.

It's a nice looking kettle, but its materials and construction just don't inspire confidence. That's why after consideration, I decided to give it 3 stars instead of 4.

Made in China, of course.

Update: After about amonth of use, one thing we have discovered to not like is that every time the water is hot and the lid is flipped up with the trigger to pour, small drops of boiling-hot water are flipped back onto the pouring hand. A big drawback for me, getting burned every time I use it.

For this reason I've taken away another star.

We have just entered our nineties. We are living in and sharing the kitchen in our daughter-in-law's home. They are heavy users of hot shower water in the morning. I am an early riser and need to wash my breakfast dishes without competing for that hot water. I went to a superstore and bought a teakettle. Took the best one offered in the 3 and 3/4 quart size. It failed miserably in weeks. My daughter in law then tried to help me out by going to a store and buying a better model. It, too, failed miserably. From our own married life with 8 children, I KNEW what model would actually win out, so I found it on Amazon.com. It is the Revere model which Peg and I had on the stove all our married life. It is a dream to use. It will not fail. I do not have to put a mitten on my hand to pick it up when I hear it boiling, and I DO HEAR it boiling!

The only downside is the computer order process. I tried to buy ONE, but the little box jumped to THREE, and I could not back out, so I own three. The one empty box and the two full boxes sit in my room as a reminder of how not to use the computer order process. I am too embarrassed to send a picture, but must admit the shiny copper bottoms in the see-through boxes are quite photogenic.

Customer Review: It is what it is

After several days of power cuts during the brutal snow storms this winter, I was in the market for a non-electric kettle. I have some 30 year old Revere copper bottomed pans and I still cook with them daily, so I thought I'd try the kettle.

Pros: It's good for what it is. The water heats quickly, the whistle works, and the handle is cool enough to hold while pouring. It doesn't leak all over the counter-top when you pour, which many a more expensive model has done. And if it's anything like the pots and pans I own, it will last for decades.

Cons: The design is, umm, retro. This might look great in some kitchens, but not mine, so it will be living in a cupboard until the next power cut. Also, I'm not a fan of plastic being in contact with my food and drink, so I'd have preferred a non-plastic spout. Never mind.

Summary: It does what it's designed to do. I'm happy with my purchase, and I trust Revere ware. For a non-fancy kettle that can be heated on a gas stove when the electricity is out, I would recommend this to a friend. It would look good in a rustic kitchen too.

Customer Review: Have had this type of kettle for 30 years.

This style kettle and this company have been around forever! I presented my mother with this same style kettle (style has not varied much over time) about 30 years ago and it has been in constant use ever since. After my mothers passing this Kettle now belongs to me and I use it every day in her honor. I have never had a smell of any sort from the water that is boiled in this kettle and it is perfect every time. I clean it from time to time with just a little simple green sprayed on top and a paper towel. A small amount of vinegar and water will clean the inside. The copper bottom is aging well also and is now a beautiful patina. I put the kettle in the dishwasher about once every three years or so to clean the bottom. The kettle shows no real signs of age and still shines like the day it was bought. The design goes with any style decor, my mother had a very traditional style and my house is mid-century modern and the kettle goes great. I can not recommend this kettle enough and will continue to keep giving them as gifts.
Great Product!

Customer Review: DISAPPOINTED
Summary: 2 Stars

I had a Revere kettle that looked like the one I just bought. I had it for over 30 years, and loved it. Recently, it began leaking out of a pin hole in its bottom. I was so glad to see I could obtain another like it (I thought). I did not think the price was too high for the quality I believed I was getting. When the new kettle arrived, I was very disappointed, for it felt as light as a feather. I thought perhaps it was my imagination, so I weighed the old kettle, and the new one. The old one weighted 25% more than the new one. Also, the "whistler" on the new one is different. When it whistles, steam does not just come out of the spout-cover hole, it comes out in every direction. The plastic, bake o lite (or however you spell it)handle and spout cover does not seem as sturdy as the one on my old kettle. It is the same old story of this most cases we now get less for more. In my opinion, the old one was much better, and it was used by 4 people, not just one.
