Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of RediCheck Remote Cooking Thermometer w/Taste SettingsCustomer Review: So far, so good Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this to use on my new smoker in December, 2006. I have used it 4 or 5 times. As of this writing it has remained accurate (tested in ice water and boiling water) and worked OK. Two issues:
First, the probe cord is shorter than I would like. It is roughly 39" which is the same +/- of most but I would like it a little longer.
Second, it does not transmit as far as I would like or as claimed, at least in my home. My kitchen is within roughly 30 feet of the smoker; however, the unit loses its signal periodically over that distance.
I am guessing that my cordless telephones and remote outside weather thermometers might be interfering with the signal. Therefore, I place the receiving unit inside the house, close to the door and a just a few feet from the smoker when I use it. Since the alert is sufficiently loud as to be heard anywhere in the house it is not a significant problem. Thus, so far so good â" 3 stars means good product. I would have to own it much longer to rate it higher.
A couple of Heads Up: When looking at digital thermometers note that many are not designed to work on grills or smokers. Many units if used when grilling or smoking are meant to be used as instant read only.
I recommend checking the accuracy of any unit periodically by placing the probe in crushed ice/ water bath and checking the reading. Next, repeat the test in boiling water.
Finally, the probes are fairly delicate and need to be cleaned carefully; never immersed in water. If accuracy is off by more than a degree, it may be time for a replacement probe.
Customer Review: Worked once. This is dangerous. Summary: 1 Stars
I do a lot of barbecuing in all kinds of weather and bought this unit to replace my Radio Shack remote thermometer which "bit the big one" due to a flareup that melted the cable.
Don't buy this unit. Amazon's a great place to shop and you have other better choices. There's a WAY better one from Oregon Scientific.
Mine worked once, then the next time I went to use it, the remote quit receiving. Something costing this much should be reliable. I replaced the batteries, but no luck.
I tried to keep using it, just by using the sender unit. However after some stuff (chicken) seemed far too rare, I got suspicious. The sender unit's readout reads about 20 degrees high, when compared to a dial thermometer inserted in exactly the same spot. Same thing with a glass of hot water.
I'm not a litigious type, but these guys are asking to get sued because their inferior product caused someone to get food poisoning.
Go buy the one from Oregon Scientific, instead of throwing your money away here. The OS unit is exactly like the one Radio Shack used to sell and works just as well. Yeah, so the presets on it are a little goofy, but if you look at the temperatures and not the food, it does perfect. Oh, and the cable on the OS product has better armor than my old Radio Shack model. Oregon Scientific AW129 Wireless BBQ Thermometer with Probe Thermometer and Remote
Customer Review: Well worth the money... Summary: 4 Stars
I received this probe as a gift since I cook so often. I have used this probe on a charcoal grill, smoker (gas and electric), and gas grill. This thing is wonderful. Just jam that temperature probe in and set the doneness of the particular meat you are cooking and walk away! It allows for me to close the lid and not have to open it back up until it is done. For the past couple of years I have not had any problems with the unit. Like someone else said, when I turn the units on, the probes read the temperatures of my home within a couple of degrees. Everything that I cook with it comes out tender and juicy. The only time it did not come out done enough was when I placed the probe to close to the bone, but that was my mistake.
The only reason that I will not give it a perfect is that you have to turn the individual units on in a particular order and hit the reset button to get the receivers to communicate. That can be a real PITA when you have to dig up the instructions to get it to work. But I can say that the instructions are readily available on Maverick's website and can be downloaded in PDF to your computer or printed.
If anything ever happens to my unit, I will not hesitate to purchase a replacement! The reason for creating a review about this after two years of use is because I am referring it to a co-worker. I hope you get one and enjoy it as much as I have.
Customer Review: Love this Wireless Thermometer Summary: 5 Stars
I absolutely think this wireless thermometer is awesome. I know I am BBQin better because of it. It has a programmable temp (you can set it go off at any temp, which I do a lot as I smoke a lot of meat). It has a timer too. I have not had any problems with transmitting from outside to inside the house. One review talks about putting the remote sensor in the kitchen so the wife can time when the side dishes are done. They could not have been more right! One review stated they have to read the manual every time they use it. They could not remember how to sync the two units once you turn them on (as you must sync them every time you turn it on). I simply labeled the back of each device. One reads "turn on first", the second reads "turn on second" and problem solved! I do nothing else and the units sync with each other automatically every time.
The temperature readings are accurate. I have a few other hand held thermometers that confirmed this one was reading the same (correct).
I have had mine for a year. I BBQ & Smoke quite a bit, and this unit is still going strong.
I have nothing bad to say about this wireless thermometer. I recommend it to all my friends. I don't write reviews very often. But I was so impressed with this thermometer I felt I must.
Customer Review: Thank Goodness! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this remote thermometer to use with my Weber Smoker and can't be thankful enough! Let me start by saying that I read all the reviews and was very skeptical when purchasing this device due to other users complaints. I usually use a Polder probe thermometer to measure the temps when smoking but the only way to check it was to go outside, and I found that I was constantly running in and out. I decided to smoke two large pork shoulders on New's Years Eve night starting around 6pm and ending at around noon on New Years Day for a total of about 17 or 18 hours. Let me say I was not chained to my smoker one bit. I was able to enjoy my evening from inside while constantly monitoring temps. I kept it on my night stand and set the alarm to go off if the temps got too high. Needless to say it was around 35 degrees outside, very windy and then it began to snow very hard. I cannot praise this little device enough and it worked flawlessy. I was able to stay warm inside and only had to go outside a few times to add a little more charcoal and turn the roasts. For the price you cannot beat the convienence this thermometer offers. It was also very easy to figure out and use. Hopefully this will last many more smokes!
