Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Reco International Romertopf Clay Baker

Customer Review: Fantastic Meals for the last 15 years
Summary: 5 Stars

I love my clay cooker! So easy to use, and after your meal is in the oven, there's really nothing more to do until it's ready. Absolutely the best cooker for chicken, although, a huge roaster may not fit. I buy a fryer chicken and before cooking, I line the cooker with a piece of parchment paper and that makes the cleanup so much easier.

Description of Reco International Romertopf Clay Baker

The Romertopf 2 to 5 pound clay baker is large enough to prepare 1 to 3 servings of meat or poultry. Clay pot cooking allows you to prepare quick, healthy, high quality meals that cost less and taste better. Food cooked in a clay pot requires no liquid unless specifically called for. The result: all natural juices, the full flavor and taste and all the essential nutrients and vitamins are retained. The taste is truly superb. You can cook all kinds of food without adding any fat, in line with the demands of modern dietetics. The Romertopf is made of a special porous clay and is unglazed inside and out allowing it to breathe during the cooking process. By soaking the pot in water before cooking, moisture is absorbed by the clay. The tiny water particles are released during cooking, penetrating and blending with the natural food juices, increasing flavor, tenderness and enhancing aroma.
For centuries food has been cooked in earthenware pots over open fires or in brick ovens. R?mertopf carries on this tradition by crafting clay pots and dishes specifically intended for cooking a variety of vegetables, meats, casseroles, and breads in the home oven. Manufactured in Mexico, each vessel is made from unglazed and porous terra cotta containing no lead or cadmium. Before each use, the pot is soaked in water in order to absorb a certain amount of moisture into the permeable clay. This moisture is slowly released during cooking, sealing in the natural juices and increasing the flavor and tenderness.

Covered in a bounty of sculpted agricultural motifs, and with a built-in handle, the R?mertopf 1/2-quart baker can be used to prepare a small chicken, a meat and vegetable stew, or a casserole for a family of four. Measuring 7-1/2 by 11 inches and standing 6 inches tall, the baker can go straight from the oven to the table and can be used as a serving dish. Intended to be used only in the oven, R?mertopf recommends washing all clay pots by hand. Due to their porous and unglazed nature, the pots should not be exposed to extreme temperature changes. --Lea Werbel
