Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of ReLight Rechargeable Book Light

Customer Review: Great book light, as long as it works.
Summary: 4 Stars

My husband bought me the Brookstone version of this book light a couple of years ago. It has been by far the best book light i have ever used, and I have tried at least a dozen.

Recently, I decided to purchase this ReLight version from Amazon since it was cheaper than the Brookstone version (but looks the same). When we received it, we were excited because not only did it look identical, but the light was even brighter and whiter than the Brookstone version (this could be because the Brookstone one is now two years old.) However, the book light started flickering randomly, but so much that it was no longer usable.

We contacted Amazon and they exchanged it with us and the second one has been much better. I am considering purchasing a couple more (thats how much we love them) but I am debating whether it is worth it to pay more ($35) for the Brookstone version or save the money and purchase more of the ReLight version. My experience with the flickering ReLight one has made me wary and I am not sure if we will eventually have problems with it or if over time it will prove as durable as the Brookstone version. It seems that the ReLight company may have some quality control issues since some of the lights seem to work and others don't. As long as Amazon does such a great job with the exchange process, I will probably take the risk and order another one of the ReLight book lights to save the $12 plus shipping.

Update 12/14/10: I have now ordered a total of three of these (because they went on a great sale), and two of the three flickered badly. Amazon was great about replacing them, but there seems to be very poor quality control with this light. I would definitely recommend going with a more reliable light until Relight can get their quality control issues worked out.

Customer Review: I think these things are so good, I've bought more.
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought my first one of these, just in pursuit of that perfect book light. While there may be a better one out there, I haven't seen it. I have experienced a bit of flickering, though once I am in position, it seems to stop. Occasionally they will flicker while turning a page, but again, once the book is still, the flickering, if any, stops. It took a bit of getting used to the led light rather than incandescent light, but I am way past that now. I am an avid reader, thus the 'demonreader' name, and read all sorts and shapes of books. I have yet to find one that isn't sufficiently lit for reading. Usually I use the higher power setting, but really it's not necessary on regular paperbacks. I would guess that coffee table art book might be a bit too large, but really, who expects to read those with a book light? I have these in all of our travel kits, and several around the house for flashlight use. I also have a couple put aside in case these negative reviews make them become unavailable. I haven't had any fail due to breakage. I have run across a few hard cover books where I had to finagle a bit to get the clip over, but that's really my only ongoing problem. They were a godsend during our power outage from Hurricane Ike. We could take short ac breaks in the car while they charged. They are also good flashlights (interestingly, no flickering when just carrying as a light), at home and while traveling. Useful too on planes, where the overhead light isn't always targeted properly, and might inconvenience a seat mate. The charge holds up well too. I have bought them as gifts, and certainly recommend them to all and sundry.

Customer Review: Best Book Light I've had so far
Summary: 5 Stars

With regular book light I tend to go through the batteries in about a week. Now I can just recharge it instead of trying to figure out how to get the darn thing open to put batteries in and don't have the extra cost. It has a high and low light setting. The charge life will last me 3 nights to a week depending on how much I'm reading at night. I'm buying my second one now. My last one gave out on a boat trip, I don't think it's really its fault, I got over a year on it and still have a desire to have this one over all the cheaper ones out there. I enjoyed the quality of light and the ease of use. And living on a small island with the power going off all the time its nice to have back up light!

The clip on this does not work that great. I've never liked clipping the book light onto the book, I feel like I'm more lit up then the book. I prefer to place the book light pointing towards the book, it really cast less light all over the room, which makes for a happier marriage. When I used the clip on mine and then adjusted the light it would flicker constantly. Not a problem for me at all, but I know this would be for some.

Customer Review: Decent Light, but Not For a Kindle
Summary: 4 Stars

This light works well enough and unlike some other reviewers, I've not had any problems with it. No battery leakage or trouble with recharging.

The drawback for me is that the clip is too flimsy to use with my Kindle, it slips off. This is definitely a light to use with regular books only. Unlike the Kandle or Mighty Brights, this has a paperclip-like clip and doesn't extend enough to fit securely on the Kindle. I did try it briefly and it moved around too much. I was afraid it would break if I pushed down on it much.

I use it on regular books and because it does stand up by itself, I use it to illluminate my keyboard or for reading other things in the dark. I keep it by the bed and it does come in handy.

It does dim relatively quickly, but it also recharges in minutes, I'd say I can use it for 5-6 hours without a recharge, which is not bad, since I don't have to replace batteries.

If they would change the way it clips on so that it could be used with an e-reader, it would be ideal.

I would have given it 5 stars if it had worked with the Kindle

Customer Review: A great little light - no more batteries to discard
Summary: 5 Stars

I have so many uses for this little light that I may order another one. When it is in its charging stand it is perfect for shining a light on a desktop or work surface- the adjustable head makes it easy to light the area that need lighting and offers two brightness settings. It's a great little flashlight when a broad, soft beam is ideal and fits easily in a shirt pocket and wouldn't take up a lot of space in a purse or backpack. As a book light, it is great although the fixed clip width (no spring loaded clip jaws) requires that you clip over the correct number of pages to hold the light securely -- I had no problem making it work although other reviews found this an undesirable feature. But greatest of all is that it is recharged fully in under 3 hours (auto shutoff charger) and burns the cool and bright, energy efficient and long-life LED's easily for 36 hours on a full charge with no batteries to dispose of. A great product.
