Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Rachael Ray Stainless Steel 10-Piece Cookware Set, OrangeCustomer Review: "Steal This Cookware" Summary: 5 Stars
I'm an experienced cook, and I'm also something of a foodie (try my green peppercorn duck - it holds up nicely against any high-end restaurant's version). And I know a good deal when I see one. But let's be frank: Not everything is always as it seems, right? Well, in this case, WRONG! The Rachael Ray 10-piece stainless steel cookware deal is *exactly* what it seems - and then some.
In my 45-plus years of cooking and entertaining, I've deliberately stayed away from cookware "sets." Every pot and pan I've purchased has had a purpose, and I've bought each piece in only the size and materials that work for me.
However, I've now moved into a smallish apartment and I'm downsizing. With comparatively limited kitchen storage space, I wanted a set of cookware that would perform across all - or at least most - of my cooking needs: Not too many pans, not too few. I also knew it had to be stainless steel, it had to have aluminum cores (or at least bases), and I was hoping for at least a few glass lids. And I did NOT want to pay a fortune.
Enter the Rachael Ray 10-Piece Stainless-Steel Cookware Set: Ten gorgeous, multifunctional, eminently practical pieces of well-constructed, heavy-duty stainless steel cookware. The thick, flat aluminum bases ensure even heating; the slight rounding of the interiors from base to side makes them work much like sauciers or chef's pans (*very* desirable!); the slightly flared but crisp edges allow pouring without dripping; the high-angled, silicone-padded handles are easy on the wrist and cool to the hand; the well-fitted lids close snugly for steaming or rest securely at a tilt for releasing steam; the lids for the saute pan and the Dutch oven also fit the 10-inch skillet, and the lid for the Rachael Ray Stainless Steel 3-qt. *Shallow* Saucepan (bought separately) also fits the 8-inch skillet...what more can I say?
Well, I can say this, for those who find too many foods sticking to their stainless steel cookware: STOP SCORCHING YOUR FOOD! If you want to sear everything, buy a carbon steel wok; you'll never be happy with stainless steel. And for those who don't like hand-washing their cookware, go ahead and put it in the dishwasher: That won't actually damage the cookware (though you'll probably void its warrantee) - but *any* stainless steel cookware will eventually become dull and discolored from caustic dishwasher detergent.
Is this set a deal, at $179.95? No, it's a STEAL. (Go ahead and price a few so-called "higher-end" sets: Comparable groupings cost as much as $1,000 - and pieces bought individually cost even more.) Rachael Ray knows her way around cookware, and she also knows her audience: people whose interest is in cookware that works, accessibly priced. Way to go, Rach!!!
Description of Rachael Ray Stainless Steel 10-Piece Cookware Set, OrangeThis cookware set is an exceptional value, including all of the pans needed to equip your kitchen with the most used cooking pieces. As the set contains only basic pieces, you'll really use each and every pan. It includes saucepans for whisking a homemade sauce or cooking your morning oatmeal, a big stockpot for soups, stews or boiling pasta, and skillets (probably the most used pan in any kitchen) that will help you turn out perfect crepes or a simple grilled cheese sandwich. The set also includes a saute pan, a wide, straight-sided pan that can perform many of the functions of a skillet but features deep sides for extra capacity, perfect for one dish meals. Start your dish in this pan by sautéing onions and browning meat, then add your liquid and other ingredients into the same pan to finish on the stovetop or in the oven. A satiny sheen and touches of color give Rachel Ray's 10-piece stainless-steel cookware set a stylish look that's also functional and durable. Included in the grouping are an 8-quart covered stockpot, 1-1/2- and 3-quart covered saucepans, 8- and 10-inch open skillets, and a 10-inch covered sauté pan. Stainless steel is a popular all-around cooking material because it heats quickly and evenly, while the aluminum-capped bases add energy efficiency and excellent heat retention. Plus, the metal doesn't react to acidic foods, resists corrosion and scratches, and cleans easily with just a sponge. The cookware set also features high-arching handles covered in grippy orange silicone that stay cool on the range and are oven-safe to 400 degrees F. Riveted on for strength, they won't warp, bend, or break no matter how heavy the load or how often used. Glass lids also keep the chef informed on what's happening inside the pots without letting heat, nutrients, or flavor escape. A nice starter set that's both versatile and inclusive, this collection is perfect for a new homeowner or as a smartly polished upgrade to a worn, gathered-over-the-years menagerie. It's backed by a lifetime limited warranty. --Kara Karll What's in the Box 1-1/2- and 3-quart saucepans with lids; 8-quart stockpot with lid; 8- and 10-inch skillets; 10-inch sauté pan with lid. 10 pieces total.
