Customer Review: initial reactions
Summary: 4 Stars
Used it once. A few observations: 1) It's not nearly as lightweight as many here have implied. I own a full set of very good stainless steel All-Clad pots and pans. I also own 10 pieces of Creuset. I know heavy, and I know light and cheap. This pan strikes me as appropriately thick-walled. It feels solid and like a serious cooking vessel. Even with gas, I don't expect much problem with hot spots. 2) I LOVE the design--its very wide and long oval shape means you can rapidly bring water to a boil and add long pasta. It also means you can use less water and heat it more efficiently--whatever your Italian cookbooks might say, you don't need a huge amount of water to cook pasta. (Read Mark Bittman & Harold McGee on the subject! McGee recommends cooking pasta in a skillet...) I cooked a pound of spaghetti in 2 inches of water last night. Moreover, the shape means that this large pan uses up less space on the stove--since it's narrow, I can fit my big dutch oven on the burner behind this pasta pot. I could never do that with my old pasta pot. (Stovetop real estate is important in my household, and there's always more lateral space available than there is front-to-back space.) 3) The spout works GREAT. 4) Love the silicon handles. Stay cool, and they are very grippy. You feel in control when your pouring off the pasta water into your sink.
The nonstick coating is the real question. I used a Calphalon pasta/stock pot for years, but got rid of it (replaced it with this new pot) because the nonstick coating was peeling and blistering.
