This thing works great. I was considering getting the Thermapen from the same company, but I'm glad I got this one instead. Perhaps the Thermapen is meant more for grilling, because it's hard for me to imagine sticking it in a hot oven and having to make a right angle with the probe and the handle in order to see the reading. With this model you aim and press. The digits are pointing straight at you, so you don't have to stick your hands very far into the oven (compared to what I imagine you need to do with the Thermapen).
I haven't done the ice water test so I don't know exactly how accurate it is, but I'm confident it's good enough for my cooking.
If you're waffling at buying a digital thermometer at all, I highly recommend doing so! Before I got this thermometer I disliked cooking meat. You know the routine: guess on how long to cook it, pull it out to cut it, see that it's not done and stick it back in. Sometimes I would just say "oh well, I don't want to stick it back in" after the first pull out and eat it slightly raw. Not anymore! This thermometer comes with a combined instructions manual / product catalog that has a handy list of "minimum done temps" on the back. Follow the guide and you'll get succulent meats without ever worrying if they're fully cooked.
