Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of RSVP Precision Pierced Stainless-Steel 5-Quart Colander

Customer Review: Best Colander Ever
Summary: 5 Stars

Right after I placed my order I saw a set of 3 colanders for $10 @ an outlet center & thought I was getting ripped off if the one from Amazon turned out to be the same as one of them @ 3x the price. Well, a few days later I got mine & I'm glad to say it's not the same. The set was nothing more than cheap mesh strainers with a base & handles that felt like they would fall off after a few uses.

This feels as solid as anything with this many holes can. Sure, it won't be as tough as my old one. It was solid, had the normal amount of holes, and after shaking, tilting, and jumping the contents, always seemed to have a cup of liquid left. That's only a little better than just tilting it over the sing with a lid on the pot. The holes are small enough that nothing goes through & within seconds (and just a shale or two) everything is almost bone dry.

I love Alton Brown, but I never liked the plastic Oxo colander he uses because the slots are too big & I'm just not a fan of plastic if the same job can be done by steel as it's easier to clean & won't stain.

Customer Review: RSVP Precision Stainless Colanders
Summary: 5 Stars

Needing a new colander, and based on a cooking magazine review, I purchased a 3 qt. RSVP Precision Pierced Stainless Steel colander. I truly expected it to work the same as the stainless colanders I have been using for the past 40 years. Boy, was I ever wrong! This colander is so far superior at quick drainage and easy cleanup, that I not only purchased the five quart size for myself, I am going to purchase one for my daughter and for each daughter-in-law (or son), despite the cost. Pasta used to get stuck in the holes in my old colanders, making them miserable to clean. Nothing gets stuck in the holes of the RSVP colanders. A quick swiped with soapy water and they are clean. They are so easy to clean that there really is no need to put them in the diswasher. Like others, I wish that the handles were more securely attached, but so far I am extremely pleased with this product. Just make sure that you order the correct RSVP product. There is a less expensive version that is not at all what this one is; it is a fine mesh and does not work the way this one does.

Customer Review: Truly a better colander idea
Summary: 4 Stars

Every once in a while, something will come along that represents such a brilliant re-implementation of a basic tool that it makes you wonder why on earth it wasn't done that way in the first place--or at least why it took so long to change. This colander does that for me.

This is the first durable colander I've seen that has incorporated the rapid drain ability of a sieve (the other way around, a self-standing, largish-capacity sieve, is an old idea). While I agree that this is the best small-capacity colander ever, there is room for improvement.

PROS:
-- Self standing
-- Sufficiently large to handle one pound of dry pasta, cooked
-- Sturdy but light: heavy-gauge stainless steel construction throughout, including handles
-- Fast draining
-- Easy to clean and dishwasher-safe

CONS
-- For both safety and comfort, I want bigger loop handles
-- It may be "simply elegant," but it also seems expensive for a basic utensil of this capacity

Customer Review: products fine but delivery is questionable
Summary: 4 Stars

This item was a Christmas gift and arrived with a food scale in the same box. The box it arrived in was ripped down one side. Someone shoved the contents back in the box and retaped it. The colander was smashed and I was afraid to keep the scale as it too was in the broken box. I refused to accept it from the carrier. I called Amazon and talked with a very nice woman who gave me a $10 credit to cover the cost of having it shipped quicly to my address. This did not cover the cost though and I ended up paying close to $5 more for the same things. Last year I had trouble with a game I ordered from Amazon. This too was a Christmas gift. I was promised a mid December delivery which was changed 2 times. The final notification promised a mid January delivery. I cancelled the order. I did order a few things from Amazon in August and that worked out well but I am very hesitant to use Amazon for my Christmas shopping in the future.
Thank you for your interest.

Customer Review: Perfect for small pastas
Summary: 4 Stars

You get a clean, quick drain with this colander
because there are a lot of small holes. So small
pasta sizes like orzo and pastina don't fall through.
You also get a fast drain-especially handy when
you want to drain the pasta and return it
immediately to the pot to be finished in a sauce.

The handle attachments do seem flimsy and at this
price, they ought not to be. But as long as it stays
in one piece, it'll be hanging near my sink.
