Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Pyrex Prepware 2-Cup Measuring Cup, Clear with Red MeasurementsCustomer Review: This cup LITERALLY EXPLODED in my microwave yesterday!! Summary: 1 Stars
The name Pyrex as well as Anchor Hocking are names we all have associated with quality glass products used in the kitchen for many years. What a shock when this very cup exploded in my microwave yesterday. Fortunately no injuries - just a mess to clean up. Wow is all I can say. I have had the cup for several years and use it daily to heat water for tea, and never quite to boiling. WOW!!!
So I took it upon myself as a consumer to find out what was the problem. Would you believe this has happened to thousands of others? Let me tell you why and refer you to the January 2011 Issue of Consumer Reports beginning on page 44. It does a much better job of explaining the problem than I could ever do. Below is a quick summary of what I have discovered.
Apparently about 12 years ago Corning sold its Pyrex name and manufacturing operations to company called, "World Kitchen". Who knew?
Well according to the in depth article they switched the glass from something borosilicate to a much cheaper to produce glass known as lime soda. There have been THOUSANDS of documented cases of Pyrex cookware literally exploding sometimes causing serious injury over the last 10 years. Our government is very aware of this problem yet no warnings or action has been taken to protect the innocent public consumer. So what else is new? I can think of many things from tainted meat and eggs to lead contaminated toys from China that we have been subjected to in the last few years. This is just one more.
So now if you have gone this far you are now fully aware of the problem. If you choose to ignore what has happened to Pyrex and Anchor Hocking products then as they always say, "Let the buyer beware". From reading the article I have found that a safe product does exist on the market. It is produced by a French company called Arcuisine. More money of course. But I don't want anything exploding in my hands or into my face made of glass, so I guess I must pay the price to be safe. Now you know why the Pyrex products are so cheap - and they aren't produced in China - or are they? According to the article all manufacturing for Pyrex products is done in Charleroi, PA. But now I'm even suspicious of that claim. After all China is a much cheaper place to manufacture most things. And who would know?
Let the buyer beware. Your government is not going to protect you.
Customer Review: Pyrex durability, but the most annoying spout... Summary: 3 Stars
Let me start by saying that I do not regret the purchase, but this is definitely a product of Pyrex's that could use a small bit of redesign.
The spout is infuriating.
Pouring anything more viscous than water out of the spout creates, at best, unpredictable results. Sometimes I can pour perfectly (if slowly) and sometimes the contents just run down the side and come off the bottom of the cup. You'd better hope the destination for your contents is wide enough to encompass the full length of this measure - there will definitely be two streams of liquid coming out. I have never owned a measure that has had a spout with this issue. I find that I either have to dump the contents out in a rush, or pour EXTREMELY slowly. After six months or so of use there is no way that I've found to consistently pour out of the spout at a medium speed - slow enough to not splash, but fast enough that I don't spend 20-30 seconds pouring two cups.
With that in mind, the handle is quite comfortable, and the measurements are easy to read forwards, backwards, upside down (wait, what?) and in any other way you can think of.
I do recommend this product, but with the caveat of that terrible, terrible spout.
Customer Review: Holds Two Cups of Coffee in Support of a Long Workday Summary: 5 Stars
A Pyrex Prepware 2-Cup Measuring Cup left on the counter of my company's kitchen took a Friday from agony to survival.
One Friday workday after sunset was only half done. Deadlines cannot be negotiated, and so my labor continued. Staring long at my unfeeling monitor, I knew it would offer no compassion to my aching body and tired soul. Hope seemed plundered as problem added to problem compiled exponentially through the day. My desk only supported misery. I made a dash for the break room.
Forgotten coffee remained in the office pot, heating now for three hours. Nearly full, I looked at it with compromised desire. Though not the coffee of my choice, I also saw I had no other option. No ordinary mug would do. My office was a long walk from the kitchen. I need something large.
Can I measuring cup be a coffee mug? I needed only that it carry hot coffee. This cup accepted 1500 ml -- two cups of my favorite elixir. Where it lacked in style, it made up for in efficient functionality. My remaining hours of work were not less long, but they were endured.
May your difficult days be offset by sufficient coffee to get you through the night.

Customer Review: Great Liquid Measuring Cup Summary: 5 Stars
There is generally not much to write about this measuring cup that hasn't already been written, but I just want to mention a few points:
1. This is a liquid measuring cup. Why would you need this? Because using dry measuring cups to measure liquids (which are meant to be leveled off at the very top with a knife) almost guarantees spillage. This cup prevents that. Conversely, you can't level off dry ingredients in this, so only use it for liquids.
2. This is both top and bottom dishwasher safe, microwave safe, and even oven safe, but not stove top safe.
3. Pyrex is very thick, and although I wouldn't test it by dropping it on the ground, it should last quite a while as long as you take moderately good care of it. Also, since it is not made of plastic, it will not disintegrate over time and leave microscopic particles of of plastic and chemicals in your food like plastic cups will.
4. If you frequently measure large amounts of liquid, there is another version of this cup that is meant for amounts larger than one cup.
Customer Review: Durability is an issue Summary: 4 Stars
This item is decently priced at $10, with supersaver shipping, and the 4 for 3 promotion. However, Amazon obviously made a mistake on the suggested retail being $42. In any case, I use this cup almost every day and recently had to replace it. Why? My last one, exactly like this one, also from Amazon, chipped on the edge with less than two years' use. This could have happened in one of two ways. I must have been careless, either in stacking it in the dishwasher, or stacking it to save space with the one-cup Pyrex measure, which also chipped in less than two years. However, I have used Pyrex for years (over 30) and never had this problem before. Actually, there is a third way this could have happened; my husband could have done it and will be advised about proper handling. In any case, my advice is not to stack this cup and to watch how you place it in the dishwasher.
