Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Pyrex 6021224 Storage 10-Piece Set, Clear with Blue Lids

Customer Review: terrific food storage that is easy on the wallet--but get some extra lids if you can
Summary: 4 Stars

This set of remarkably durable Pyrex storage containers impresses me. These have come in rather handy, especially now that I am bringing food back and forth to someone who is not feeling very well as they receive chemotherapy. They are indeed made of strong glass that just plain feels tough and strong; when they say it won't break Pyrex means it! I also like that you can see through the glass containers to know what's inside them.

Another good feature is that you get several different sizes with this package of Pyrex containers. Just as they say, you get ten storage containers of different sizes along with blue plastic lids. They can be used in the microwave, the refrigerator and the freezer; they will also be safe in the dishwasher although I sometimes "pre-wash" them myself in the sink.

There are a couple of cautionary notes about the lids. Some other reviewers commented that the blue plastic lids can either warp over time or eventually become too stretched to cover the containers properly--and they are right. In addition, the lids will not look or feel as sturdy as the Pyrex containers themselves--that's no real surprise since the lids are plastic and the Pyrex itself is far stronger than plastic. If you can get your hands on some extra plastic lids, keep them on hand for the inevitable day when the blue plastic lids in this set start to wear out.

Overall, I don't have any major complaints about this Pyrex 10 piece food storage set although the blue plastic lids will wear out after two or three years, maybe four. The lids on my set lasted three years. Get these and use them with confidence--but keep a few extra lids on hand.

Customer Review: Not very usable
Summary: 2 Stars

I bought 2 of these sets to replace all of the plastic storage sets we had previously. I was looking forward to having the Pyrex versus plastic for all the same reasons listed by others such as cleaning, appearance, durability.

I would still recommend Pyrex over plastic but this particular set design is not very good. The straight sides without a top lip make them very difficult to use when heating in them.

When using the bowls in the microwave the bowls become VERY hot which requires the use of oven mitts to handle them. However, the slick straight sides make it likely that the bowl will slip from your mitted grip.

Likewise, if you are emptying the VERY hot bowls into another before eating, the straight sides and oven mitts make it virtually impossible to tip the bowls to pour without dropping them.

One other aspect of the shape that I have found is that they overflow in the microwave much more frequently than ones with sloped sides.

For storage only however, I think this set is just fine. The lids fit very tightly and the clear glass makes it very easy to identify the contents. But for me, if I am investing in Pyrex I want to be able to cook in it as well.

I have since purchased some of the Pyrex bowls that have sloped sides and a lip around the entire top. These also have lids for storage. I have found this design to be infinitely easier to handle hot and still just as useful for storage. As an added bonus, these new ones nest inside each other much better than the straight sided ones.

Customer Review: Great product, glass is very durable and difficult to break
Summary: 5 Stars

A passionate home cook that has been honing her cooking skills for the last 25 years writes this review. My favorite cookbooks are "The Professional Chef" by the Culinary Institute and "Culinary Artistry. Cooking is my form of therapy. I have owned my set of these for at least 5 years, and possibly longer. I have not broken a single piece in that time. This may not sound like much but I am hard on things, and for all of them to still be intact is a minor miracle in my home. The glass is very tough.

Pros:
1. Glass is very tough, seems almost indestructible
2. I like that they are not plastic, so I feel safe about reheating food in them
3. The lids fit well for the first 4 years or so
4. Replacement lids are available at the Corning and Revere Factory Outlet stores
5. These containers fit well into lunch bags so that you family can take your healthy home cooked food to work or school.
6. The containers stack well inside each other for space cramped kitchens
7. You can bake in these and then cool the food (I place the entire container into a roasting pan filled with ice water) put on the lid and slide the pan into the refrigerator.
8. You freeze can food in these containers

Cons:
1. The lids do stretch and warp over time, I recommend buying extra lids before you need them. My lids lasted approximately 4 years.

Overall, I would recommend these to anyone that likes to cook in quantity and doesn't like to reheat food in plastic. I use these everyday in my kitchen.

Customer Review: Ouch! Way too hot to handle.
Summary: 2 Stars

These containers and their accompanying lids work great for storage in the fridge and freezer, have no trouble in the oven and stand up time and again to the rigors of dishwashing, but don't try to handle them bare-handed out of the microwave. Something about the composition of the glass allows it to accumulate heat from the microwave oven to the point where the outer surfaces of the bowl are actually hotter than the food inside. Many times I've found the bowls to be so hot that the only way to remove them was with a glove or oven mit even while the food inside was only lukewarm. My hands are pretty tough and can take quite a lot of heat before I have to let go, but when I've microwaved anything in these bowls for more than a minute or so, I can't even touch it. Using gloves or mits works, but makes handling the smooth glass bowls rather awkward and hazardous. I've tried leaving the bowls in the microwave for a while to cool down before attempting to handle them, but if you wait long enough for the outer heat to dissipate, then the food inside gets cool as well.

I had purchased them mainly to store and reheat leftovers, but have found the overheating of the outer surface to be such a hindrance, that I've actually gone back to plastic.

If you really need bowls for microwave reheating, I'd look elsewhere, but if all you need is lidded cold or room temp food storage containers that can take the oven and dishwasher, then perhaps these are for you.

Customer Review: Round lids did not fit
Summary: 2 Stars

This 10 piece set is no longer sold though Amazon. Just wanted to let you know since I had problems with both 10 piece sets I ordered at the same time.
I bought these sets because I was tired of my huge collection of plastic storage containers. I wanted to use them for freezer to oven/microwave use. Unfortunately, all of the lids on the round containers did not fit. I was not able to even force on a single one of the round lids. The rectangular lids are fine and tight. Pyrex will not help take care of the problem, so Amazon customer service, after several emails back and forth,is taking care of it.
I read the reviews for this item, and for other sets in this line, and though the problem with the lids was mentioned, it seemed to be in a small minority. Until I get replacements, the round containers make nice soup bowls!
When I use the items to freeze portions, there is little frost when freezing for up to 2 weeks. I usually wrap the containers in plastic for longer storage. Defrost overnight in the fridge, then reheat in oven or microwave. The glass containers perform great, with nice uniform heating. Just a warning-microwaving is often quicker than you might think, and the container is very hot.
When storing same size pieces, I must put paper towels in between, because by nesting, the containers tend to get stuck together. If you are not strapped for space, separating sizes shouldn't be a problem.
