Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Pyrex 6021224 Storage 10-Piece Set, Clear with Blue LidsCustomer Review: It's Pyrex...of course it's Good Quality. Summary: 5 Stars
One usually can't go wrong with Pyrex products. Very good glass set with lids. Great for storage purposes, and much better than using plastic ware. These containers do stack up nicely (with the lids on) in the fridge, and take up less room than other storage pieces I've used. The size of these containers works perfectly for smaller households. And, a very good price at $14.99.
I don't think I have ever placed any of my plastic lids in the dishwasher. It makes sense to me that if doing so, over time they would break down. What's it take to wash a lid or two by hand anyways?
On another note... For the first time since Dec. 2008, I received an order from Amazon that wasn't as advertised. I don't believe this was by any fault of Amazon, because the packaging of this product was secure and undamaged. Two of the lids were missing-1 bowl, 1 rectangular. Appeared as though the lids were just not packaged correctly;seemed to be a QC issue on the part of the product supplier.
I've got to tell everyone though that my 1st experience with returning an Amazon item could not have gone any better! I immediately went online to inform Amazon of the problem and was given step-by-step instructions on how to return the item. I followed the instructions and printed out the Amazon barcode and return mailing label as directed. I always open packaging boxes carefully and keep everything until I'm absolutely sure I don't need the packaging materials & boxes any longer. So, all I had to do was repackage the items as I found them and securely tape the boxes closed. As per the instructions, I affixed the mailing label on the same Amazon box and shipped it back, at no cost to me. How sweet!
On a Friday I notified Amazon about the problem online, indicating that I wanted a replacement item. The following Monday Amazon shipped the replacement order and it arrived two days later. When all of this took place, I was preparing to travel out of state in a few days. Initially I assumed it would take several days for the replacement shipment to arrive, and I was concerned that the box would sit out on my porch for days. But lo and behold, the new shipment was at my front door within 3 business days--just in time, before going on vacation!
What great customer service Amazon! And, I want to say thank you for making your returns procedure so easy to follow. When mistakes are made, it sure is nice to know it won't be a "hassle" to remedy the problem. I will surely enjoy using these Pyrex glass storage containers, and the great customer service makes it doubly so. Again, Thank You Amazon!
Customer Review: Good dishes, but bowl rims chip & break easily Summary: 4 Stars
PROS: Overall I am happy with these dishes. The round plastic lids seal very well. They are snug, but not exactly water tight. The square lids do not seal as well along the sides but do stay on. Being made of tempered glass, the dishes can be used in the microwave, oven, fridge and freezer. They are heavier than thin plastic containers for taking food to work, but you avoid most of the plastic leeching that happens with those containers. The lids can leech plastic if left on loose during reheating due to the condensation that collects on them. Except for the bowl rims (see "CONS" below), these are fairly durable dishes.
CONS: The major down side to these are the glass rims of the round bowls. They are the weak spot and can easily chip or break. STACKING the bowls with out their lids on is NOT advised. This is especially true for the smaller "2-cup" size bowls. Due to the crystalline nature of glass and very little tapered angle (the sides are almost vertical), pulling 2 bowls apart can shear off pieces of glass from the rim of the bottom bowl. You may not be aware of this when it happens and there is a danger that small shards of glass may be left inside a bowl. Those of you with children should be aware if this point. The square dishes do not appear to have the stacking problem.
When using a dishwasher, you must be careful to NOT allow the rim of one bowl to come in contact with another dish. Otherwise the water pressure may rock the bowl back and forth resulting in impact damage and chips to the rim. I suggest trying to move or wiggle the bowls by hand to check the range of motion while resting on your dishwasher's rack. With a little experimentation, you can find the right spots to load these bowls safely. This is mostly a problem when the bowls are at an angle. The best way to load them seems to be securely on their side. Just be sure they cannot move around and are not tipped back (which will trap water and soap).
Pyrex appears to change their manufacturing frequently, which one assumes is to improve the product. The color of their glassware has a darker blue-green tint than they did a few years back. The rim (lip) of their dishes have a more rounded edge than before. However, the issues I describe above are still present. It should be noted that the rim weakness usually only results in small chips and I have not yet had a "fault line" or deep crack start in one with normal use. With over 2 dozen of the 2-cup size bowls I have only had one casualty when it was dropped from about waist height onto a very hard floor.
Customer Review: Pyrex = Safer Summary: 5 Stars
How long have we been using those plasticware or the brand that sounds like the things would be made of rubber? How many times have we seen those orange, red, yellow stains and the lingering smells that are absorbed in the plastic containers? How many times have you microwaved your food and the plastic started to melt or burn at the bottom when heating oily food? Switch to glass and rest easy. -- Ok i know it sounds like a sales pitch, but in reality these things probably sell themselves. So here is my review:
Pros:
1.) Affordable. For about ten or fifteen bucks for a 5 containers is great compared to what people paid for their plastic ones.
2.) No more melted/burned containers from oily foods like cheese, fried foods, meat, sauces, etc.
3.) No more absorbed smells from last use foods or dish soap fragrance. This is a major plus.
4.) No more broken/cracked lids.
5.) Less spillage/Less leakage.
6.) See clearly what's growing in there.
7.) Not just for storage but great for heating foods for everyday use
8.) Keeps food a bit fresher. I had some plasticware that did not have a good seal. Food always dried unexpectedly with those. This has a nice tight seal.
9.) Nice variety. Comes with a nice rectangular large one that is great for spaghetti and meatballs. The others are great for containing leftovers and carrying lunch.
10.) No absorbed colors. It stays clear.
Negatives:
1.) Lids are hard to snap on for the first few uses. They seal tightly.
2.) Glass break when dropped on the floor. I have not dropped any yet.
3.) Lids can melt. If you microwave the containers sealed with the lid, your lids will become useless. They will loose their shape and hold.
4.) Heavier than plastic.
5.) Lids are a bit thin and loose shape or weaken when repeatedly frozen or microwaved. Allow a few minutes for lids to defrost before opening. Avoid microwaving lids for too long.
6.) No grip on the bottom. Hard to handle when hot. Slippery on most surfaces.
Overall:
Great buy. I prefer these over plasticware. The lids would be nicer if thicker. Would be nice if the bottom were non-slip. I usually mistreat plasticware when I use them since they won't break. I try not to bang these around. These things will not release any harmful stuff like the plastic stuff, but the lids are questionable. A big step up from plastic.

Customer Review: Great storage for taking meals to work Summary: 5 Stars
I would highly recommend this set along with the other items Pyrex offers. My containers are used daily for bringing meals to work for the past 4 years and have basically performed flawlessly. They are used in variety of ways depending on what is being made. For example when making soups I tend to make large portions and then divide them into the 2 cup round bowls and freeze them using cling wrap as the cover. I believe that this addresses the issue with leaky lids that some people are reporting. Leaking lids are not an issue for me since my lid have only seen limited usage. Just make sure that you transfer your meal for the next day to the fridge the night before and the issue of leaks is now resolved since the meal will be partially frozen when you transfer it. This method can be applied to most everything you make and the condition where are lid may or may not fit becomes a moot point.
I've also had great success with using cling wrap with containers without freezing. The key is that you do not overfill the container and that the top of the lid is not wet. You need to have cling wrap that is over sized and this does allow for a very tight seal if you take a second to make sure the top is sealed.
Like many of the other reviews I switched to glassware for the issues that exist with plastic storage products regarding staining / smell / leeching / durability / etc.
An other issue that people have mentioned with items breaking is more than likely is just attributed to extreme changes in temperature and this doesn't just apply to glass but many other items as well. To those who say the containers are too hot after microwaving you could do something like this to make the experience simple. When microwaving your meal avoid using HIGH for a short blast to heat the food. Using the HIGH setting can not only make items in your meal tough/chewy but it also makes the glass container hot. You can easily set the power level to medium/low and increase the time to heat and what this will do is slowly heat the food and the end result is a meal that is properly heated/not over cooked with a container that is easy to handle. Hope that this helpful for those that have issues with the product as these techniques have worked just fine for me.
Customer Review: Keeps your produce fresh! Summary: 5 Stars
I did not buy this set from amazon, but from kmart instead. But I just had to come here and write a review for these amazing storage bowls.
We bought a head of butter lettuce 6 weeks ago. I had no place to store it in the humidity bin in our fridge, so I plucked all the leaves off the lettuce and put them in the 7 cup round bowl. Then I put the bowl in the fridge and forgot all about it.
Come tonight, I am cleaning the fridge and find the bowl with the lettuce still in there. I was curious as to how well the bowl worked, so I thought I would try a couple lettuce leaves.
The results?
THEY ARE AS FRESH TASTING AND AS CRISPY AS THE DAY I BOUGHT THEM!!! I am not kidding! Absolutely zero wilting, decay or even mold. Now if that isn't amazing storage, I really don't know what is. Keep a head of lettuce in a plastic bag for a week in the fridge and see what it turns into.
I also tried a leaking test after I read some of the reviews here. Mine didn't leak any liquid at all and I tipped the bowl several times.
If you do buy these bowls in person rather than online, check the lids - make sure they are tight fitting. I did this and my bowls have never failed me. I also handwash the bowls and lids, so I'm not sure if that also keeps them in good shape, as opposed to the dishwasher.
Glass is extremely hygienic, does not carry odours and is so easy to clean - it doesn't stain unlike plastic!
I'm soooo excited that the Pyrex bowls kept the lettuce fresh. They worked even better than our humidity bin! I should call Westinghouse and tell them!
I can't wait till they are on sale again so I can get more. They are wonderful and so worth the cost even if they aren't on sale.
