Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Pyrex 1077126 Rectangular Clear-Glass Food-Storage Containers with Blue Plastic Lids, Set of 3Customer Review: MUCH better for your health & environmentally responsible! Summary: 4 Stars
I've known for a while that plastic is terrible for our health but considering all the others things I invest in for my family's health, this was another thing on my 'list' of things to replace. Want to learn about the dangers of plastics? Do some searches online for the dangers of BPA & Xenoestrogens leaching into our foods & bodies. MANY people have issues with their endocrine systems within regards to their adrenals, thyroid, hormones...more girls are coming up with too much testosterone and more boys are coming up with too much estrogen in their systems. It's time for us to be more responsible for ourselves, our children and our environment.
After coming across an article about it taking 500-1,000 years for a grocery store plastic bag to decompose in a landfill (I don't know if that is accurate or not, I'm simply quoting what I've read), I started to think about how FULL our landfills are already, how young my children are and how much waste we as a family have contributed and still contribute on a daily basis and had this horrid feeling in my gut about what the soil & water would be like when they grew up and started their own families. So I started cross referencing and reading up at HOW MUCH we actually DO add to the waste....
Let's see...2 children...so years of disposable diapers & wipes, training pants & wipes, feminine products, toilet paper, paper towels GALORE, fast food containers, soda cans, WATER BOTTLES GALORE (we've since changed this after purchasing a Water Ionizer Machine), Grocery Bags GALORE, plastic baggies GALORE, juice bottles, canned & glass goods, plastic & cardboard wrap that toys come in, etc, etc, etc...if you stop and think about how much waste you've contributed in a lifetime and either visit or look online at info on landfills, it's enough to make your stomach turn.
So I decided to start replacing my plastic sooner than later and bought 2 of these Pyrex Refridgerator shape storage sets and a 10 piece Pyrex set (containing a large rectangular container & 3 round containers). We tend to have leftovers quite often and to prevent overeating or to easily measure out a serving size, I like to use the smaller 1 cup and 2 cup containers. These small rectangle containers are 1 7/8 cups which is perfect for a serving size of veggies, protein or fruit OR of course a small amount of leftovers.
There are pros and cons to both rectangle and circle shaped storage containers although these ARE the BEST thing out there so far that I have found...
The rectangle shaped ones are WONDERFUL to store foods in the fridge because it's easier to organize rectangle or square shaped containers however if you fill them too much or if they have lots of liquids in them, they can leak if tipped over. The round containers have not leaked on me so far but at least for me, I do prefer the square corners in the fridge for space saving features. I find that square ones are a tad easier to keep organized and store more items easily. Both sets ARE GREAT and I love how we can now SEE EXACTLY what is being stored in the fridge. I can easily wash the containers in my dishwasher without worrying of heating plastic, causing it to leach chemicals on our foods. However, I DO wash the lids by hand. My husband can warm up foods in the microwave without me complaining of causing the plastic to leach chemicals on top of the radiation from the microwave. (Poor guy, what's a guy to do to keep things easy, huh?) :-)
I thought I'd have to be super careful about having more glass but they've been WONDERFUL and I plan to add more pieces.
My ONLY complaint would be that I wish the regular prices on them would be a bit lower and AT FIRST, the lids are a bit hard to fit securely...you need to sort of work a tad to get them to fit over the glass lip but after a while, they fit more easily. I have an old pyrex baking dish that has this WONDERFUL rubber type lid that fits so securely and so wonderfully. I wish that Pyrex made those rubber type lids again vs this harder plastic but as I understand it, they are no longer available. Another option I wish Pyrex would offer is a larger set of the rectangular / square container sets.
But a set, you won't be sorry but just be prepared to be hooked on them and will soon want to replace ALL of your plastic containers! :-) If I had to start over again, I would have invested in the larger sets...like the 18 piece round set and added 1 or 2 of these square / rectangular sets.
