I received the purifier as a result of the class action law suit of the original model. The suit was with regard to deceptive sales practices and claims that were proven to be false. After about a year (when the warranty expired) it started making a hissing sound like steam escaping. I cleaned the filters repeatedly and restarted the unit with no change. I called customer support and they told me if it was over 1 year, I was out of luck. I told them I didn't have the receipt to check the date and they said they have no way of looking up either me or the unit. They told me to go back to the store where I made the exchange to see if it was indeed over the 1 year timeframe, but they said they only keep records in the stores for 3-4 months.
I decided to take the unit apart my self to see where the hissing was coming from. I was able to take the back off and still start the unit while it was apart. I found the hissing sound. It was a junction of 3-4 wires coming together in the lower part of the back of the unit.
The junction was spitting out a blue electrical arc that had burned a hole through the black plastic housing of the connected wires. This is fie hazard if I ever saw one. That blue spitting arc is live inside a machine that runs 24/7 and in my son's room ta boot.
I immediately called back customer service and asked to speak to a supervisor. I spoke to a guy named Bret. Bret basically told me to take a hike. The unit is no longer for sale and is out of warranty. He said he would report the fire hazard to someone and told me to have a nice day.
This experience is way out of line compared to the prior years of dealing with Brookstone. They used to have lifetime warranties on everything they sold and replaced items after many years of use. They were an awesome company to deal with. Now they sold me a fire hazard which was clearly a flaw in workmanship and I get no satisfaction whatsoever.
