Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Pulltap Double Hinged Waiter Style Corkscrew in a Gift BoxCustomer Review: About All One Needs for the Task Summary: 4 Stars
I have to marvel, and laugh a bit, over all the fancy and expensive methods available to uncork a bottle of wine. From the anthropomorphic to the simply over-engineered, some of these pricey contraptions make one feel like they're conducting their own NASA launch.
But think about the last time you found yourself in a reasonably-good (or better) restaurant, when you perused the wine list, made a choice, and your waitperson quickly returned with your chosen bottle. He or she likely brandished a corkscrew *just like this one*, deftly performed the uncorking ritual in less time than it took me to write this sentence, then just as deftly slipped said apparatus back into an apron pocket afterward. Besides the sheer, hard-to-improve-upon utility of this compact tool, the better waiters and sommeliers make using these things look so cool I can't believe anyone would spend silly money for something more elaborate (or less portable).
And, really, this corkscrew gives you all you need: a hinged, articulating catch system that allows you to get a good "start" on stubborn and/or fragile corks without ripping them to shreds; a nicely-shaped and smoothly-finished metal handle that's comfortable and offers a good amount of leverage; and a plastic insert inside the handle to eliminate pinching. The thing feels like it's built to last, too.
Want to impress dates/party hosts? Do what I did and buy two: one to keep at home, and one to pocket when going to a party, or a restaurant with a BYOB policy (i.e. doesn't have a liquor license yet). When someone asks "hey, where's the corkscrew around here?", you casually reach into your jacket pocket and save the moment, if not the evening. (Please try to remain nonchalant about it all.)
As mentioned by another reviewer, the sharpness of the foil cutter leaves a *bit* to be desired, but it does the job with a tad extra effort. Still, I'll take this over anything else I've seen to uncork a bottle, especially at a moment's notice.
