This is one of the best gifts I have ever received. I especially love the ergonomic design of the handle so that, even when the kettle is filled to the maximum, there never feels like there is any danger of its slipping out of these old, arthritic hands. Since the handle also stays cool, it is so much safer than a traditional kettle. I have had the kettle approximately four and a half years (I think)and it has always worked perfectly. Mine has never has any plastic smell, even when new. I would surely advise those purchasers who have had problems to simply return the kettle, if not to the retail seller, to Proctor-Silex. You should all have one that works as wonderfully as mine does, and I suspect the manufacturer would feel that way too. I will be buying one as a gift for someone else who has risks of getting burned with an old fashioned kettle.Customer Review: It's a good kettle, but...

We drink tea and instant coffee every day, so this kettle get's used alot! Saying that, we are on our second kettle in the past year, and it's starting to fail on us now. (The on/off switch isn't working properly.) These kettles seem to have a life span of about six months at our house. Apart from that, we've experienced no bad smells or any other problems. Considering the cost, we will probably get another one of these when it stops working altogether.
Update: We emailed Proctor Silex and told them about our kettle not working and they told us they would send us another, all we had to do was pay for shipping ($7). We told them we didn't want to pay for shipping and we would probably buy a different make. They sent us a new one for free and waived the shipping.

Having drunk a lot of tea in Europe, I decided on getting an electric kettle while here in the U.S. I just received this Proctor Silex 1.7L kettle. I was a little skeptical because it is competing with the likes of Braun and T-Fal. But, I was pleasantly surprised by its performance. It will boil 1.7L of water in about 8 minutes. I thought that was a little long, but I attribute it to the 110 volt system here versus the 220 volt system in Europe. Nevertheless, this kettle works great. The handle is ergonomic, the opening is big enough to clean and or remove the heating element, and it does boil water. I have only had it for a day, so I am not sure about durability. Nevertheless, it's a great electric kettle; a must for any serious tea drinkers!!!Customer Review: Danger: Does Not Always Turn Itself Off

I wanted an electric kettle because sometimes I start the water heating, go to do some work in the home-office and then forget about the water. I ruined a tea-kettle last year doing this and wanted something that would turn-itself off. I've had this kettle (Proctor Silex) for 7 weeks. Twice it's failed to turn itself off. I return and almost all the water is boiled out and it's still going. Fortunately I haven't forgotten it for very long yet - but this is not what I want or need. I won't even use it now unless I'm standing right there.
NOTE: I keep the kettle clean, have not submerged it in water, and the second time I checked to be sure it was firmly on the base (in contact). So this behavior of not turning off is not something I did wrong.

I had doubts about this kettle simply because I had no idea about this brand. Yet something attracted me in the first place and that's the capacity of this kettle: I had been looking for quite a big electric kettle for a while, but all I coukd find in real stores around were small kettles offered by famous brands like Braun.
I grew up in Europe and tea is my daily ritual. So I thought this kettle would be big enough for me since I hate to fill up a kettle with water after 1-2 cups. It is particularly convenient when you are having guests. All standart features: automatic shut-off, detachable base.
So far it's been doing a great job since I bought it in November.
