My wife and I are starting to really get into cooking. We find new recipes, we give them a try and alter them to our tastes. So naturally, we've need to expand our selection of kitchen tools. Even bad cooks and chefs need the right tools for the job. We saw this and thought it'd be a good starter. Not too many bells or whistles, size seemed to fit our needs. Got it home and my first impression was this was more like a 'My First Mandolin' for a kid or something by Fisher-Price than for someone's kitchen.
It's not very big. Just over a foot in length. Width is less than a normal sized medium onion. The handle does offer a good hand hold. It's designed to be able to sit over a bowl, but in my experience, that's just asking to send a knuckle or a finger tip over the blade. It comes with a removable guard to help guide whatever needs cutting over the blade. It's made of a hard plastic with a knob to hold on to. The bottom of it has hard spikes to be driven into the item. It's got a knob on the side that will push up a set of blades to let you julienne whatever you are working on.
The problems we had with this came from its size, blade position and how the guard works. It's not very wide. If you're doing carrots, cucumbers, zucchini or something similar you're fine. Larger items will present a problem fitting in between the rails the guard slides on. The guard itself allows you a way to not run your hand over the julienne blades or the main cutting blade. But only if you sacrifice control. I found I could either put down force on the item to keep the guard on it, or I could push the item forward. I couldn't get that angular force I want to keep the item on the mandolin and push stuff through the blades. This made the job harder than I thought it should be and several times I nearly julienned my fingers.
The main blade itself is a solid and sharp deal. But the model I received has it straight across from side to side. No angle to it at all, so you end up trying to push the stuff across a wedge hoping you've got just the right angle of force to make it work. The picture shows it at an angle which I think would be much more ideal and helpful. At one point I tried to use it over a bowl to catch the cuttings, the grooves on the far end help it sit nicely. But once I started to use it, I felt like I was either going to break the bowl or sent the whole contraption flying as the mandolin pushes forward and the bowl backward, spilling everything.
Overall, we might use this for something simple in the future, but if you need to do some serious cutting, either stick with a sharp knife or grab a more heavy duty mandolin.
