Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Proctor Silex 72500RY 1-1/2-Cup Food ChopperCustomer Review: NO POWER BUTTON, not great for baby food. Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this in the hopes of using it to prepare food for my baby--I wanted something between my Vita-Mix Blender or Cuisinart 7-Cup Food Processor and manually mashing food with a fork. Unfortunately, this tiny chopper doesn't quite hit the mark.
The first thing I noticed was that there is no power button! The way you turn it on? By turning the lid! That is very odd to me, and I don't really like it. That said, the unit is so small and doesn't hold enough food that you will need to worry about holding the lid (keeping the power on) for very long.
The first food I attempted chopping was cooked apples and pears. I added some water, and while the chopper did chop the pieces, it certainly wasn't anything that resembled baby food texture (i.e. smooth). My baby, who will eat just about anything except things with strange textures, wouldn't eat the apple/pear mixture. I also tried a vegetarian burrito and that didn't work AT ALL. Stuff stuck to the sides like crazy and I had to keep pushing it down.
I know I shouldn't expect miracles from a $12 chopper, but I could get pretty much the same results from my hand chopper (like this Oxo Good Grips Mini Chopper), albeit with a tad more personal exertion. For things like chopping veggies, I can generally use my knife much quicker than cutting things into tiny pieces (small enough to fit in the unit), chopping them in the chopper, pushing down the sides, chopping some more, then having to empty and clean the unit.
I will keep this around to try again as my baby gets older and starts eating other textures, but in the meantime, this will probably just sit on the back shelf.
Customer Review: A MOST LOVED KITCHEN ITEM . . . gave as gifts also Summary: 5 Stars
My last Proctor Silex small food chopper, which was basically the exact same product with just a minor improvement, I probably had for 8 or 10 years. This is 8 or more years of HARD and constant use. I personally own 5 chopper/blenders, including one I paid over $400.00 for and this was and is again, my Steady Eddie that gets used at least weekly.
I WAS THRILLED to find out that PS mad the same product. I purchased 4 of these, one for my own use and 3 to give to the kids and BIL as stocking stuffers. . . so obviously I SPEAK VERY HIGHLY of this product.
I could not even tell you how many hundreds and hundreds of times this was used to blend salad dressings, chop salad items, including lots and lots of nuts for various cooked items. What was amazing to me is that even after all the years use the blade looked and chopped like it did the first day.
So what happened to my former chopper? My hubby was helping in the kitchen and he turned the lid hard and in the wrong direction when it wasn't on properly and the little plastic part which activated the chopper broke off. I would bet I could have replaced the top plastic lid, however the price on a whole new unit was so good, I oped to just get a new one. BTW, I NEVER HAD ONE DAYS worth of problems . . . AND the slight design modification NOW has a much wider activator on the lid, which is great.
BTW, I'm constantly chopping up cooked meat or chicken for our dogs and this chops this perfect in just a few seconds. ALL the same size with just a few flips of the lid. YES, I LOVE THIS.
Customer Review: A real cut-up Summary: 5 Stars
You really know you like something when you break it and your first thought, after "I broke something in the cabinet", is--how do I get this exact thing again and get it ASAP, especially when you've owned it for 6 or 7 years and wonder if they still make the same unit any more? Well, I broke the lid on this (my prior identical unit) a week ago when I was putting back a mixer that lives in the same cabinet--my bad. Don't be afraid that this unit is too fragile, as it isn't for normal use, but yes I can break things. So I ordered a replacement and now have it, same type unit as before. Works great for small jobs, such as chopping more than a tablespoon of herbs, making guacamole or a sauce for two or four, finely chopping peppers, and so on. Container holds two cups, but this fills it to the brim so useful capacity is likely only one cup or so, but that's plenty as long as you aren't making the main course in this or feeding octuplets. It's also under $25 so it's a good price. It doesn't take up much storage space, and I do recommend storing the lid on top of the unit instead of putting the lid directly on the shelf where some bozo like me might smash it with something very heavy, although that calamity ended up giving me the opportunity to write a favorable review about this product. Doesn't replace a regular sized food processor for big jobs nor a blender, but I found I was using this a lot for lots of stuff around the kitchen.
Customer Review: Great if cooking for 4 or less and dont want to use a processor. Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of the most heavily used things in my Kitchen. The chopper is great. It has 3 moving parts.
1. The Top
2. The Blade
3. The bowl.
I have cooked endless meals where a lot of chopping is required this little beauty can do it all. Chopping, Mincing and pureeing.
I tend to cook a lot of soups and sauces where when you Sautee the vegtables you have to have it fine enough to cook down. The Kenwood mini chopper will cut it down perfectly in 3 seconds. (Any more you are heading to puree land.
Additionally it is small enough that it does not take up a large amount of counter space like your standard food processors.
Cleaning is a breeze. Basically remove the lid, blade and bowl and rinse it with water. If you want to put it in the dishwasher it is safe for the dishwasher.
Additionally, this will make quick work of most fruits, vegtables, nuts and everything thing else I have thrown at it.
For the price you can not beat it. I actually will be buying some of these for the family for X-mas. At $25 it makes a great gift.
Customer Review: Getting bowl and lid off/on too much trouble ! Summary: 1 Stars
I have owned a mini chopper since I got married, my previous one was a small, inexpensive one and I finally wore it out. I thought this would be the replacement but I had nothing but trouble regarding the way the bowl fits into the processor and the lid into that. In theory it is the same idea as my old one, this one is very tricky and I end up spilling food in the process. When pureeing tomatoes I was tempted to tip the whole thing over into my bowl, it was that much trouble to keep taking the bowl out. I also found that in moving the full bowl it was very difficult to keep from leaking, if you moved the chopper blade at all the contents spilled out the bottom. On my final use I managed to get the lid on above the lip that it is supposed to sit under! And it worked, despite all their efforts at safety it allowed it to work in that position and then wouldn't come off. My husband had to man-handle it to get it apart, my two cups of home-canned tomatoes are worth more than this pieces of junk! I told him, do what it takes, I have to get it empty to return it to Walmart !
