Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Proctor Silex 57171 7-Speed BlenderCustomer Review: broke after 5 uses Summary: 1 Stars
This blender is very weak. It has a small blade that cannot pull down anything of substance and I had to stir even soft fruit in liquid or it would never get cut up -- just the bottom part of the mix spins around. I used this blender four times since August 2006 (when I bought it) to make 'smoothies', always with poor results. As the other reviewer said, the fruit stays lumpy. The little blades aren't strong enough. Yesterday I wanted to liquify some cooked potatoes for soup. Of course they are thick and starchy, but after the usual 'stirring' to get them to move through the blender, the speed buttons started to vibrate and I could smell the unit getting hot. I wasn't overworking it -- mainly pulsing and then running it for about 30 seconds. All of a sudden, it wouldn't work any more. It just burned out. If you actually cook and expect a blender to blend things, don't buy this blender. I'm going to see if Amazon will take it back. (Note: after I wrote this, I was told by Amazon that I had to get in touch with the manufacturer, which I could do because it was within 90 days of purchase. However, the company wants me to mail in the plug and $5 for 'shipping' to get a replacement, which obviously I don't want. Why would I want to pay $5 more for a product that didn't work the first time? Why would I want the product again at all? Amazon would have taken it back, but they wanted it returned in the box, which I threw out. I'm even more dissatisfied with this product now than when I wrote this review originally. Maybe I can make it into an interesting planter and sell it at a craft fair . . . )
Customer Review: A perfect addition to the college student's kitchenware Summary: 5 Stars
This blender is probably one of the best around at its price, but don't be fooled based on this sentence alone into thinking that you'll get a better blender by just paying a few extra dollars. Spending under $20 on this one will do you fine.
I started out making shakes with these. I would just mix milk with the protein mix and blend just to make sure that everything would be mixed with no protein mix residue in my drink.
Later, I began adding strawberries and bananas to the mix. One person earlier said that frozen fruit doesn't cut easily and needs a bit of thawing. Just as a precaution, when I'm putting a 1/3 cup of strawberries in my shake, I microwave them for 14 seconds.
It's true that the blades aren't especially HUGE. But then, what's the point? Bigger blades would call for a bigger container, and thus a bigger blender. This blender's small, its container is made out of plastic just so that clumsy people like me won't end up doing something stupid and shattering it.
While there are blenders with more speeds out there, the 7-speed function works fine for me.
Customer Review: A Best Value In Blenders Summary: 5 Stars
I have a Hamilton Beach Scovill Blend that I got as a gift from my favorite Aunt back in 1983, and it's still going strong! However, I needed a second blender and also wanted one with a larger Jar then my Hamilton Beach Scovill's 44 oz. Jar. There are many times when I need two blenders, and with a larger jar, that means I can make Smoothies or Icees for the Kids and don't have to make a second batch.
After looking at a few blenders with large 48 oz. and up jars, I decided to buy the Proctor Silex 57171 because of the great price on Amazon.com. I looked in all of the stores and online and couldn't find a better price. When I got the blender, opened the box and put the blender together, and I was very surpised at the quality and sturdiness of the machine. I have put it to some very heavy-duty use over long periods of time and it has performed admirability.
The Proctor Silex 57171 is a very well made, sturdy and dependable blender with a large 48 oz. jar, that does more then do the job well. And you can get it for under $20.00! You can't go wrong with this one.
Customer Review: Economical, functional, what more could you want? Summary: 4 Stars
I've had mine for about a week, love using it. Was a bit worried by other reviewers who said it didn't have the power they'd wanted but my concerns were unfounded. It mixed a concoction of fresh uncut mangoes, pecans and condensed milk perfectly, even though I added the nuts after the other ingedients. It gets ice nicely chopped - I didn't try to overload the blender though. I tried the the various speeds and they're accurate. All in all couldn't be happier for the price. I suppose one could buy a more expensive blender with more bells and whistles and get more reliable power, eg for chopping huge chunks of ice etc, but this one really does pretty much all that I ask of it.
Customer Review: Better then expected Summary: 5 Stars
While this may not be state of the art blender, as in it doesnt have auto pules (like your gunna walk away from it anyway). Your geting a heck of a deal for less then $20. I dropped the pitcher on floor and the plastic did not shatter :)
My #1 favorite thing is it actually does do a good job mixing up my chocolate protien shakes (normally impossible to mix the powerder)
Note: For those of you who like healty pina coladas V8 makes a colada cooler (youll find next to ocean spray and room temp juices in store) which is doped with soy protien and vitimens, and believe it or not it is actully is one of the better tasting pina coladas out there.
