Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Proctor Silex 33015 1-1/2-Quart Round Slow Cooker

Customer Review: Still going strong after nearly 3 years... great item
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this Proctor Silex 1.5 quart slow cooker in October 2007 (a month shy of 3 years, now) and it still looks and works like the day I bought it. One of my uses is when serving food buffet-style, like taco night or having people over to watch football, and it keeps food hot until I've got the other foods ready, and it's great for those that like to come back to make themselves a second plate.

For outright cooking in it, my favorite use is slow cooking turkey breast tenderloins. My favorite sandwich has shredded up turkey breast meat, but I don't want to deal with cooking a whole turkey or even a big turkey breast with the bones because I get kinda grossed out by it and it's a lot of work for sandwiches. So I buy boneless turkey breast tenderloins, put 2 in the slow cooker, set it on high, and about 2.5 hours later they're done. The cooker cleans easily with the removable crock pot, and it neatly pours out the liquids or fat. I'm pleased with this little slow cooker, and my sister has one too.

Customer Review: good
Summary: 4 Stars

It's the first slow cooker I've owned and I have cooked one meal with it only, today, but I like it already. It's $20 and it's basic (no power light for example, which feels odd for any kitchen device) but it has a good quality internal white ceramic pot and glass lid. Three settings - keep warm, low, and high - and nothing else (no timer, no automatic way to switch from cook to keep warm). I had read that some slow cooker lids rattle while they're cooking, but happily that problem did not show up, on low cooking anyway. I cooked a meal for eight hours, and it did not show any signs of drying out, so I think it will be fine for leaving on low heat during the work day. The internal pot lifts out for serving, and it cleaned up immediately I put it in hot soapy water. Size is fine for two or three servings. I'm now kind of glad I could not get the Breville slow cooker (good reviews but much bigger, and out of production) and opted for this because it's small and simple but it does the job!

Customer Review: Isn't this just the cutest little cooker?
Summary: 5 Stars

I needed a small cooker for dips, and this unit has proved to be the perfect choice. Well made, inexpensive, and versitile temp control. It will fit in nicely with my two larger cookers. BUT, I've got to question all the reviewers that said it's perfect for small families. How small are we talkin' here? Like Barbie doll size? This is a tiny cooker. It will hold 3-4 chicken breasts, or one very small chicken. It would cook just about the right amount of oatmeal for two adults, but beyond that it's suited for two adult sized entree at best unless you pack it with food and sit on the top.

Here's a good small sized recipe:
Brown 1.5# of cubed pork chunks(shoulder or butt) and add to cooker with one medium sliced onion, 1 chopped jalapeno pepper with seeds, 1 tbsp salt, 1 tbsp minced garlic(or 4 whole cloves) and one can crushed tomatillos. Cook overnight on low. Fill tortillas and add chopped onion, sour cream, and cheese if you like. Enjoy.

Customer Review: You get what you pay for . . .
Summary: 3 Stars

I guess you can't expect that much from something that is so cheap but I confess I was expecting more from this after reading all the good reviews.

Good points

It's extremely cheap
It does work - I cooked some rice & beans and it came out pretty good
It looks fine.

Bad points

The outside is not heat insulated from the heating element so most of the generated heat is used to heat up the outside which becomes uncomfortably hot - not very efficient use of energy and not very "green".

When you first turn it on it gives off quite a strong smell of hot paint - so if you don't like that kind of thing you might prefer to leave it turned on in your garage for a while until this vapor release eases off.

I will keep and use this little crock pot but if I was buying again I would be prepared pay a little more and look for a better design.

Customer Review: Great little workhorse!
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this little slow cooker primarily for overnight steel cut oatmeal, but have been using it almost every day for other things. I'm trying to incorporate more whole grains and legumes into our diet and this little cooker is wonderful for cooking up a batch of quinoa or lentils. I can load it at lunchtime, and the meal is ready four hours later. The small size is perfect for one quart soup recipes and things seem to cook very evenly. I'm especially looking forward to having it around this summer, to cook grains for salads without heating up the kitchen. The removable crock is great, and as long as I remember to spray it with cooking spray, clean up is a breeze.

The lack of an indicator light doesn't bother me. It heats up quickly and I can tell when it's on. Fewer things to go wrong, is my motto. I have a harvest gold crockpot from the 1970s that still works fine, and I expect this one to last just as long.
