Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Proctor Silex 33015 1-1/2-Quart Round Slow CookerCustomer Review: Excellent for empty nester .... or a student! Summary: 5 Stars
This little slow cooker has everything you need: removable crock, longer cord, three (*3*) heat settings, glass metal-rimmed lid, small footprint. As far as I can tell, it doesn't overheat, even on high. I just made a wonderful roast in it: about 1.5 lbs chuck roast (trimmed), 1 medium Walla Walla sweet onion, 2/3 can low-sodium beef broth, 2 Tbsp worcestershire sauce, and 1 Tbsp no-salt garlic/herb seasoning blend; brown the roast in a little oil, put in crock with other ingredients; cook on high for 4.5 hrs or on low for 8 hrs should do the trick; thicken the juice with a little cornstarch for gravy to serve over mashed potatoes --- HEAVEN!!!
It's the perfect size for 2-3 chicken breast halves, a small pork roast or a pork tenderloin or two, a nice small pot of soup, etc. You should get enough for a meal today plus leftovers for a couple of additional meals.
Clean up is a breeze with the removable crock, and the exterior of the unit cleans just fine with a damp cloth. The small footprint allows for out-of-the-way placement on the countertop for cooking, and easier storage.
I'm an older adult grad student, and this little cooker is going to get a lot of use this winter while I'm working on my thesis. Highly recommended!
Customer Review: Best Bean Pot Around! And a Great Slow Cooker too! Summary: 5 Stars
I love my crockpot. I make dried bean dishes and this baby is perfect for dried beans. Put in a cup of beans and 3-4 cups of water, set on low and let is cook all night or all day. Then an hour or so before serving, toss in all your favorite flavorings and spices or complete a dish, like turn the beans into a hearty chili.
It is the PERFECT fuss-free way to make dried beans. I can't live without mine, I know because I broke my old one while sleep walking, and for weeks, I was miserable trying to duplicate dried beans on a gas stove and there was no comparison. I needed my little crockpot back for my bean cooking!
It's also great for tossing in leftovers and making a homemade soup or stew.
Any cheap cut of meat will be super tender once it's slow cooked in this pot. The three settings are MUST, do not buy any other crockpot that doesn't have these 3 critical settings:
Low, High and Keep Warm. Draws minuscule electricity and doesn't heat up your kitchen. Since I love 14 bean burritos, this is perfect for making the 14 beans first from dried beans. For the budget minded, you can't beat dried beans paired with this crockpot.
Customer Review: Great Little Cooker for Singles or Couple Summary: 5 Stars
This cooker is just the right size for one or two people. I was discouraged looking in the stores only to find the huge cookers making at least six times as much as I could possibly use. So it was a great discovery to find this little cooker, not too small like the one designed for sauces, but not too big - the one and one-half quart size is perfect for my needs. Just received it recently, and put it to work right away cooking real oatmeal overnight to make a healthy breakfast in the morning. It can make the kind of creamy oatmeal from scratch that normally takes a long time on the stove. I added raisins to the overnight cooking and they came out almost reconstituted into round grapes! I found them delicious, but if you prefer chewy raisins, add them after cooking in the crock. The clean-up is easy even though the crock will form a crust on the inside. I fill it with warm water and a little detergent as soon as it cools, and everything stuck to the sides will slide right off. I haven't tried it yet for dinners, as I have more time in the evening to cook, but I'm looking forward to making one of the scrumptious recipes available in the crock pot cookbooks.
Customer Review: A Real Slow Cooker Summary: 5 Stars
Unlike most of the other little crockpots, this one is the real deal in miniature, not a dip-heater. When I have to take a dish to a party I drag out the monster crockpot, but for just the two of us this is perfect! I can throw in a meal early in the day whenever I am not busy and it will be sitting there ready to eat when my husband rolls in that evening. In his job it's hard to tell when he'll get home so I really appreciate crock pots. No rushing around cooking at the end of a long day... trying to put something on the table when you are ready to blob out on the sofa. This one cooks a small meal and the removable little crock fits easily in the dishwasher, or in the fridge if there are leftovers or for cook-ahead items. It does a great job on small quantities of dried beans, too, giving about the equivalent of a canful the first day and then coming back out of the fridge the next day for the chili. I haven't tried pinhead oats overnight in this yet but that is something I will do, since I love oatmeal and my husband hates it. It'll make just enough for me. This is exactly what I was hoping for: crock pot convenience without the gallons of leftovers!
Customer Review: Great for oatmeal Summary: 5 Stars
I've been known to buy kitchen appliances that end up gathering dust, but this little slow cooker is used almost everyday. I wanted a small slow cooker to make my oatmeal in the mornings while I'm busy exercising and this does the trick. I finish my workout and breakfast is ready and waiting!
I've read other reviews from people who use steel-cut oatmeal and cook it for several hours. However, I use regular rolled oats (not instant) and cook on high for about an hour. You might have to adjust the water a bit. I add fruit to my oatmeal (fruit cups, craisins, frozen berries, etc.) and it all cooks up beautifully in this little cooker. The manual does say that food cooks more quickly if the crock is less than half-full, so it might take longer than an hour to make a double batch of oatmeal (I haven't tested that yet).
The only tiny criticism I have is that there are no indicator lights to show you that it is on. From the pictures online, I had thought the little dots below each setting were lights, but they are not.
