I read almost all the reviews before I purchased this waffle maker. Yes the handles do get hot except for the very edge and the inside is not removable but if you're careful you won't burn yourself when you're lifting it open, you can always use a paper towel and as far as cleaning, I only use it for waffles so a quick wipe with a damp paper towel works for me. I loved it because I just buttered it once and the batter never got stuck. There is only 1 setting so no fussing with a dial and it makes the BEST waffles. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside and you can make them thick if youlike b/c it holds a lot of batter w/o spilling out. Love it and reccomend it highly!!!Customer Review: Love it

Such a nifty little appliance. Makes awesome waffles! I make savory waffles....by adding shredded cheese, veggies, bacon, etc. The first time I used it, I followed the instructions and sprayed the grids with non stick spray. (The waffle maker is already nonstick). My waffles weren't that crispy. So the next time I used it, I didn't spray it. Just poured the batter straight in...and they were fabulous. NOTHING STICKS TO IT! I put cheese in them, and if it oozes out it literally picks right off. As long as you have some sort of fat in your batter, like oil or melted butter you should have no problems with sticking. I love it, highly recommend it. Well, we wanted waffles and that's what we got with this waffle maker. It works as advertised. Nothing fancy here. Plug it in, make the batter and by the time your done mixing the batter, the ready light is off and you pour your first waffle. Takes about 4 minutes per waffle and they come out moist on the inside and crispy on the outisde. And they dont stick. I don't use any spray or butter on the non-stick surfaces. So, we are happy with our waffles.
UPDATE 11/8/09: It's been eight years and this waffle maker is still going strong. We use it about once a week and it has never failed to delight us with great waffles. And it's easy to clean too.

I received this as a gift and I've not had one problem with it at all. The only thing that I don't like is that there is NO light indicator to let you know that the waffle is ready. The light indicator that is on there is only to let you know that the heating element is on and heating the iron. But you have to watch the steam coming out of it to tell that your waffle is ready. But that's not hard to do either. So if you're picky about having some sort of indicator to let you know when the waffle is ready to pull out, don't get this one. Otherwise, it works great and I've not had any problems with getting the waffles out when they're done! I really like this!Customer Review: Exceeded my expectations

I have been on the market for a good waffle maker since the nonstick coating on my old one started chipping away. I purchased the Waring Pro due to the good reviews but found it to be WAY too big and it did not even produce good waffles in my opinion. I decided to try out the Proctor Silex and I was blown away. It made the most perfect restaurant style Belgian waffles quickly and easily. It can be stored vertically so as not to take up much space as well. My only criticism has to do with the handle. It is inconvenient since it is located where much steam escapes causing you to potentially burn your fingers. Other than that, I couldn't be happier with this item.
