Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Proctor Silex 22605 2-Slice ToasterCustomer Review: TOAST UNEVEN, CAN'T POP UP MANUALLY, CORD IN FRONT Summary: 1 Stars
This review is for the Proctor Silex 22605 2-Slice Toaster.
The toasting wires are straight flat bands that run diagonally & heat differentially. A terrible burnt electronics odor filled my kitchen first time they warmed up. Don't know about second time, because i gave that toaster away quick.
Several reasons:
(1) Cord attached on front corner wouldn't reach my outlet without turning my toaster backwards.
(2) Bread browned too unevenly.
(3) I couldn't pop my toast up when i decided it was done before the toaster did.
My grown son, standing beside me, couldn't pop it up, either. I gave the toaster to him.
Son says, it toasts evenly enough to suit him, he doesn't care about the cord postion & he will simply yank it from outlet if bread starts to brown too much. AND he will remember to keep toaster someplace out of reach of his young daughter because the sides get VERY hot, in marked contrast to ad on the box it came in which reads, "Cool Sides." I wonder if son isn't feeling toast-deprived & desperate.
Myself, i'll stick to oven-broiled or pan-fried toast until i find something that works better. This toaster is unlike any other Proctor Silex, indeed, any other other toaster, i've come upon. Maybe i'll try to get my old $18 Proctor Silex repaired.
Customer Review: pure junk! Summary: 1 Stars
I love toast, and for years was a die-hard toaster oven fan. When my last one stopped working, and all I could find was "Made in China" (even DiLonghi!) I decided to save some counter space and get a toaster. Since cash was tight, I bought this one at the supermarket and despite wishing I could pop the toast out easily to check for done we got along just fine. Until, about a year into our toasty relationship, it decided to quit lowering the bread. Even holding it down didn't lead to toast, so I went back to the supermarket in search of a new cheap toaster.
Different supermarket, same toaster only black. Figuring that the last one dying so soon was possibly a fluke, I bought the black toaster and took it home. (Did I mention that I bought it in a town that's 25 miles away?) Next morning I put the bread into the slots, pushed down, and....it wouldn't stay down. Same deal, new toaster. Needless to say I drove the 25 miles back to the store, returned the toaster, had a chat with the woman in charge of that section - who cheerfully told me she'd had the same problem with hers! GRRRRRR.
DO NOT buy this toaster! EVER.
Lesson learned? I'm checking Amazon's reviews from now on, and buying here. At least if it sucks I don't have to drive 50 miles!
Customer Review: HEY, I WOULD BUY IT AGAIN, REALLY LIKE IT Summary: 5 Stars
Was searching for a white toaster (white is the ''theme'' of my kitchen...peaceful) and could not find one at any local retail stores. Decided to try amazon and selected this no-frills white toaster by Proctor-Silex (model 22605). It's just outstanding, esp. for the price. The size is comfortingly ergonomic and pleasant to the eye, it's easy to handle (when not in use, I keep it in a cabinet), easy to shake crumbs out of and if you are only toasting, say, 2 slices of bread (and yes, it will accommodate bagels), it doesn't get too hot on the outside. But I am not addressing the main point of a toaster: to toast. Yes, it even manages to do that function very well. The dial is not numbered but has oval impressions you can select. Usually, I use the 3rd position impression. Very pleased because the bread comes out ''just right'' equally on each side, to me it is toasted not only in taste but also in appearance. A great value. Used to buy all the ''bells and whistles'' but as time goes on, I go for the best quality for the main function. Surprised at how often that method leads to great results. Well, in my opinion, you can't go wrong with this selection. I guess the only drawback would be if you did not want for whatever reason the color white.
Customer Review: brings the fire department to your home Summary: 1 Stars
I've never written an Amazon review before, but this product deserves one. I got this toaster last week, and quickly realized it was not the best toaster ever made - uneven, burned some edges, inability to stop midway except by pulling the plug out. I wasn't terribly offended - the toaster was extremely inexpensive and the toast still relatively edible.
Tonight, I decided I wanted a late night snack so I popped some pieces of bread into the toaster. Despite putting it to the middle setting, the bread somehow came out a bit soggy, definitely not toasty. I put the slices back for another go around and went back to doing whatever I was doing. A few minutes later, I hear the fire alarm go off outside my door (I live in a dormitory hall). I turn around and notice smoke coming out of my toaster and my room filled with smoke. I quickly pull the bread out of the toaster and bring the toaster to the nearest open window.
The campus police and city fire department all come by within the next 15 minutes, and I have to shamefacedly tell them I caused the fire alarm to go out in a huge dorm in the middle of the night because I burnt some toast. Parting words from the fire department? "Get a better toaster."
Customer Review: THIS BRAVE LITTLE TOASTER JUST MIGHT LAST FOREVER BUT BE CAREFUL: IT'S HOT Summary: 5 Stars
IN A NUTSHELL: WE HAVE USED THE MODEL #22205 DAILY SINCE 1997
The model 22205 is almost an exact twin of the model offered here, except it was offered for sale to us in 1997. We have 5 children and this brave little toaster has seen alot of service since 1997 without a single problem.
WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT: 900 WATTS - WHITE ENAMEL FINISH - CRUMB TRAY
We have used and overused this little appliance and while 5 coffee makers and 3 'Foreman Grills' have worn out this toaster keeps toasting just like it always has.
CAUTION: HOT TO THE TOUCH
Like toasters of old, this one is hot to the touch with only thin metal and white baked enamel between your fingers and the red hot nichrome filaments that are powered by 900 watts of electricity. Actually, it was the 900 watts versus 7-800 watts of other toasters that got me to buy this in the first place. It even has a crumb bin! Well, 9.5 years and counting, but soon we may want to replace it for a 'cool-touch', though I think we will always keep this brave little toaster around for sentimental reasons.
