Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Prime Pacific Stainless Steel Pasta MachineCustomer Review: Easy use, good construction quality, no assembly Summary: 5 Stars
As someone who already made homemade pasta dough at home and cut it by hand, I already had the toughest part of using a machine like this under my belt. If you know how to make homemade dough and to make it to the point that it's not sticky, you'll have a great time with this machine for the occasional rolling and cutting of pasta, noodles, etc. I've used my own recipes, not the ones that came with the machine, with no issues.
The construction feels heavy for the size of the device, and there is essentially no assembly other than attaching the handle, which is used in one side for rolling and the other side for cutting.
I had no issues with the bracket to attach it to the table, nor any issues with clearance of the handle. If you're accustomed to meat grinders, tomato juicer separators, etc. you'll have a good idea of what you need available to make this clamp to your table successfully.
It's not a huge machine. The passes of dough aren't that wide. A normal 3 egg dough will need 3 to 4 passes to get all the dough through for rolling. That being said, including clean up, this device saved me about 2/3 of the time it would normally take to make, roll and cut homemade pasta/noodles. Completely pleased for a first time use of a device like this.
Customer Review: Pretty cool little gadget Summary: 4 Stars
My husband and I are not the biggest of pasta eaters but this little gadget along with the "The Complete Book of Pasta and Noodles" that I bought from Amazon might change that. I have never owned a pasta machine before but my husband (who is half Italian, half Swed) was pampered by his grandmother who makes most of her meals from scratch. Tonight was our first night using this machine and it was simple to set up and use (handle is a bit long and I removed a kitchen drawer so I could comfortably clamp it down to my counter). The only thing I wish was that the manufacturer had listed which thickness settings worked best when making various types of pasta. Tonight we made fettuccine alfredo with grilled chicken. Yum Yum! We had taken our thickness to 5 which produced thick, but manageable noodles (next time I will use a 3). But in all I feel that this is a great little addition to my kitchen gadgets. I have one suggestion for cleaning however. Others have suggested either using a brush and cloth to whipe off excess flour. I tried doing this, however I am impatient. So, I used canned air (like the kind you clean a keyboard with). If you do this blow your air into a sink so your flour does not go everywhere. I think it made cleaning a lot faster!
Customer Review: Good value... Summary: 4 Stars
For the money, this is a fun way to make your own noodles. They turn out more evenly than if you were cutting by hand. However, I can't really say that it was much faster than if I had rolled and cut them on my own. I am not an experienced noodle-maker, but I thought this was relatively user friendly. I did need to apply vaseline to the ends of the noodle cutters on only our second usage of it. Also, it was difficult for me to find a good spot to clamp it to. Our table was too wide. The countertop didn't have enough of a lip to it (when I would try to tighten it, the knob for tightening would run into my kitchen drawers). In the end, I opened up a drawer and clamped it to the countertop above the drawer. However, my counter top edge has a bit of a curve to it, so it still didn't clamp well and made it a little trickier to use. I would probably give this a three star rating instead of a four, but I don't know how much of my lack of efficiency in using it was due to my own inexperience, and the inevitable fact of life that making your own noodles may be fun and possibly healthier, but it is not faster!
Customer Review: I love it! Summary: 5 Stars
I can see there is trememdous variability in the quality of this machine, as some can't use it at all due to mechanical failures, and others have no trouble at all with it. For myself, I have had no trouble using it at all. It has worked flawlessly for about 10 batches of pasta; sheets, spaghetti noodles, and flat noodles. I discovered through trial and error that one cup of flour, one egg and a couple tablespoons of milk makes enough pasta for one meal (6 servings). It also makes enough pasta to work with. More than that gets too big for one batch, I had to subdivide in order to work with it. Also, I discovered that thin sheets work great for lasagna, but if you leave it a bit thicker (3 or 4) it goes through the noodle cutters much better. The thinner sheets do not get cut very well in the noodle cutters. I can make up one batch of pasta in about 20 minutes, start to finish. Something else that is in the manual, that should be emphasized is, never wash the machine with water AT ALL. If you do, it will rust. Just brush off the extra flour and put it away.
Customer Review: Not bad at all Summary: 4 Stars
This is of course, not, built like a fine Swiss watch; However, it does work as represented, and made a nice batch of pasta. For the price it certainly does the job and does it well. Making pasta requires more work than most people believe it will take, and it's never like watching Mario on TV who makes it look effortless. You have to run the dough through the rollers several times, folding it into thirds and advancing to thinner settings one click at a time. Don't forget to make and throw away your first batch as this ships with a protective coating of machine oil on the parts, and I wouldn't recommend eating Chinese machine oil in any diet. Then remember that you NEVER wash this machine unless you like rust.
So if you're wondering if this is too cheap to be true, the answer is no, it's fine and will work. OTOH If you expect to pay $10 for a $250 pasta making machine you will probably be disappointed.
