Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Presto Pro EverSharp Electric Knife Sharpener

Customer Review: Excellent job, and fast
Summary: 5 Stars

First of all, to the person who says the motor often stalls: RTFM! The manual specifically mentions this, and I've noticed it happen as well (on the first knife). What happens is that you have a tendency to press too hard, but you aren't supposed to. You're supposed to let the weight of the knife do all the pressing, and draw it gently across.

Once I followed the instructions exactly, I didn't have any trouble. It took significantly less time to sharpen all 5 of my kitchen knives than it did to sharpen just one with a stone (probably less than 10 minutes for all the knives). The end result was at least as good as what I accomplished with my stones, and I didn't risk putting a big gash in my hand (as I did once before).

I'm very pleased with the results I've achieved on my knives, and this sharpener is significantly cheaper than many of the other options.

Customer Review: wish I bought this earlier
Summary: 4 Stars

This knife sharpener works really good, especially for the money. I've bought a hand held knife sharpener from Chefmate a number of years ago -- worthless. I also tried buying a sharpening stone, couldn't get a good edge on any of my knives that way. I've also tried a two stage manual knife sharpener used with filet knives, with sharpening rods, not very good for my kitchen knives.

Nothing has worked for me, except for this Presto. It's easy to use. The only downside is that the stones rotate in one direction. When the sharpener faces you as I draw the knife through the left slots of each of the two stages, it catches a little, even with light pressure. That's why its not a five star from me. On the right slots of each of the two stages, I haven't noticed it catching. After sharpening, if I look closely, it looks like micro serrations.

Customer Review: Promising, but....
Summary: 3 Stars

I ordered and received this item promptly (12/23>12/24), and set out to sharpen all my VERY dull knives prior to preparing our Christmas feast the next day. The item seems sturdy, and I sharpened my first knife through the 1st stage without any problem (I could tell it was sharper already). Upon drawing it, and others, through the second (final sharpening) stage it was obvious that the spinning wheel inside was out of balance, as there was an unmistakeable quick shudder/bounce while using that stage. The knives are much sharper now, but careful inspection reveals that the edges are not smoothly sharpened, but rather "chattered" if you will. I will be returning this item, and hope to get lucky with the next one.
12/29/10 UPDATE: Replacement unit received... SAME PROBLEM - perhaps it's a bad lot. I am returning the replacement and will be looking for another model.

Customer Review: Presto does the job better than expected
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought the Presto Pro knife sharpener after many failed attempts at sharpening knifes myself manually. I had been using the type of sharpeners that had to be done by hand. I would say that maybe I didn't know how to do it right, but for such dull knifes that have chips and dings on the blade, it was very hard and tedious to take those out by hand. And then I came across this automatic knife sharpener. I was skeptical about getting it, but I trusted the majority of the previous good reviews from it and haven't regretted it since. The knifes I tried to sharpen many times before took no effort and no time at all with this machine. It actually turned out to be fun! Instead of waiting for the knives to become "sharp" I'm now waiting for them to become dull again, but I might have to wait a looooong time... I hope that you'll experience such joys with this machine. :)

Customer Review: Nice Effective Little Gadget
Summary: 5 Stars

I used the sharpener about 4 times immediately after receiving on several different types of knife. First was a small pocket knife with a 2 inch blade. Then a couple of well used kitchen knives with 3 inch and 8 inch blades. Finally a brand new hunting knife with a 6 1/2 inch blade. All were equally as easy to pull through the guide. Read the instructions and do exactly like it says and you can't mess it up. All four blades were sharpened to a dramatically better edge, even the brand new knife. It couldn't be easier as long as you pay attention to the guide slots and keep the knife parallel to the table while pulling through. It's too soon to tell how long the edge will last. I'm sure it depends on use and quality of the blade (the 2 kitchen knives were high quality Cutco) but as of now, I can't say I've ever seen a better product of this type.
