Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Presto 3510 FlipSide Belgian Waffle MakerCustomer Review: Best thing since sliced bread Summary: 5 Stars
Have been in possesion of this Waffle maker for almost 1 month. We surrendered a second generation waffle maker from the 60's (waffles were 1/2" thick) that began to melt the plug.
THIS IS THE WAFFLE MAKER TO BUY!! My teenage son told me this morning, "If I could eat these waffles every morning, I would." Waffles have become our Sunday Lunch staple. These are over 1" thick with deep wells to hold peanut butter, blueberries, strawberries, syrup, powdered sugar, banana chunks, and anything else we want to throw at them....oh yeah, whip cream (my daughter's favorite)
The timer on the waffle maker is a very nice feature. Each push of the "minute" button adds 1 minute to the timer. Each push of the "seconds" button adds 15 seconds to the timer. We cook for 2 min. and 30 sec. with our recipe. Preheat waffle iron by plugging in when you begin to mix the batter.
2 cups all purpose flour,
1/2 t. salt,
4 t. baking powder,
1 T. sugar,
4 T. of melted butter (or 1/4 cup oil).
2 eggs seperated,
Mix dry ingredients into mixing bowl.
Beat egg YOLKS and add milk.
Combine with flour mixture.
Add melted butter (or oil) and mix well by hand.
FOLD IN stiffly beaten egg whites until batter is light and airy.
This waffle iron will accept a "dripping full" one cup tupperware measuring cup dumped right in the middle. Set timer for 2:45 for darker waffles or 2:30 for light waffles. Flip iron after 15 seconds of closing.
Recommend spraying both griddles with cooking spray before first waffles each time. The tab that keeps this Waffle Iron upright when not in use is an especially great feature.
UPDATE:
Have now used for 7 months. Works flawlessly. Still devouring waffles. We even make extra on weekends to pop into the toaster during the week.
2nd UPDATE 11.22.2010. Has worked without fail. This is an excellent product! We now use it 2-3 times per month and love the large deep well waffles.
Customer Review: A Great Waffle Maker! Summary: 5 Stars
Adding my accolades to all the rest; this is simply a great, easy to use, waffle maker!
We really like Belgian waffles, but seven dollars per waffle at our local pancake house really breaks the bank.
After our latest waffle breakfast - combined wallet-bleeding, we checked into getting our own waffle maker. The overwhelming positive reviews of the Presto made us take the plunge and this has proven to be an excellent purchase.
The device heats quickly, cooks quickly, and makes perfect Belgian waffles. Our second waffle was better tasting than any restaurant waffle we've ever had (the first was an experiment to figure out cooking time, batter placement and cooking procedures.)
We've saved preparation time by using premixed waffle batter. There's still a little preparation time involved in heating water, softening butter or margarine, and combining the ingredients into the mix.
Once batter is mixed the waffle cooking can be fast and furious, though we've discovered that our mix and our machine takes about five and three quarter minutes per waffle for a deep golden brown - a bit longer than most folks claim they cook their waffles.
An initial shot of cooking spray on the grids keeps waffle batter from sticking and the cooked waffles jump right out of the machine, but make sure you do not open the waffle iron too soon or you will ruin the waffle - use the timer and watch the steam for indicators when the cooking is nearing completion. A spatula will help spread a cup or so of batter over the grids quickly so you can lower the top cooking leaf down on the batter and get the baking process moving, then after about fifteen or twenty seconds, flip the irons to the other side - we then rotate sides every minute or so, just to keep the heating consistent and to give one of the "kitchen assistants" a role in the process.
Perfect, delicious waffles every time; we are really happy with our Presto waffle maker.
Customer Review: Very nice, inexspensive and easy to use. Summary: 5 Stars
I got this maker for christmas 2010 so I cannot comment on the long term performance of this product. I read alot of reviews for different makers before I choose this one. My biggest concern was a nicely made waffle. This maker does just that. I followed the directions in the enclosed manual and had no problems. I used a small pastry brush and lightly coated both sides before each use and waffles just lift out with your fingers. I've only cooked 2 waffles at a time so if you were cooking many, I don't know. Maybe you MIGHT want to lightly recoat. Maybe. You do have to get use to putting the right amount of batter in but after a couple times you should get the hang of it. Its true that there is no beeper when the waffle is done but thats not a problem and DO NOT let that stop you from buying this great product. The instructions give you a cook time and also tell you that when the maker stops steaming that the waffle is done. This is mostly true. Don't wait until there is no steam or you will probably burn your waffle. If you watch the steam in conjunction with the timer you will do fine. I cooked mine for 4:30 minutes. You can also open the maker slightly and peek if you want. There is no on/off for the maker. It's on when you plug it in and off when you unplug it. No big deal. Also, the timer does not shut off. Again no big deal. When I'm done using it, I just pop out the battery which is very easy to do. Just follow the manual and you will enjoy. I used a soapy dish cloth to wipe it clean and then dried with paper towels. Overall, for the low price and the great waffles it makes, not to mention the nice storage design, this IS a 5 star. I'm very happy. The only thing left is to review the longevity of the maker. If it holds up, I would call it perfect. P.S. I have no connection with the making or the sale of this product. I am just a regular consumer like you looking for the best buy.
Customer Review: A winner--if you are even a modestly competent cook Summary: 4 Stars
I've owned four waffle irons over the years, some with all the automatic bells and whistles and some, like this one, that are manual. Give me the manual ones any day. The results are far more consistent. First of all, anyone who can boil water should be able to tell when a waffle is done. It does vary depending on the ingredients you use and the type of waffle you are making. Sensors don't accommodate these variations well IMO. Trust your nose (does it smell done) and your eyes (has the steaming slowed down but not stopped). If in doubt, maybe make a test waffle or two. Note the time it takes for perfection, then set the timer. 3 1/4 minutes is a good bet for most waffles. Or just rely on your nose and eyes. For those who can manage this, the Presto is a great little waffle maker. Its consistent. The waffles are very deep with a crisp crust and soft interior, it folds up nicely for storage, and its a real bargain. The flip design is very easy to use and works great. It heats up quickly, the non-stick is genuinely non-stick, and you really have to overload it with batter before it will make a mess. I've spent $100 for other brands that didn't work nearly as well, and that didn't last. Plus, I've found that you can't trust the variable doneness indicators on the fancy automatic machines and ultimately you had to use them on manual mode to get the best results anyway.
The only gripe is that there will be a slight ring of increased darkness right over the heating element, and this persists even if you let it completely heat up beforehand. A two-ring element and some heavier metal might fix this, but would up the cost. Docked one star for this. Nonetheless, the virtues of this little machine far outweigh this one small problem.
Customer Review: Good waffle maker if you're watchful Summary: 4 Stars
We bought this waffle maker after another (ending in 'ing') failed [my attempt to fix the known issue myself failed]. It makes very good Belgian waffles if you watch the time and adjust it (downward) after the first few waffles. Like other reviewers, I found that 3min 30sec seems to be a good starting point, with 3min 15sec better after make 2-3. We really like Krusteaze Belgian waffle mix, and so I haven't tried any of the recipes included with the unit.
Pros:
- Simplicity.
- Makes very good Belgian waffles.
- Small footprint when closed and locked upright, which means it's easier to keep it at hand.
Cons:
- Timer has to be set for each waffle.
- It's easy not to remember to set the timer.
- If you start to set the timer and don't press the buttons quite rapidly enough, it will start to count down anyway, which means you can have 2min on the timer instead of the 3min 30sec you meant to have.
- If the unit is sitting on a non-textured surface (like a Formica counter), it has a tendency to slide as you are trying to push the timer button.
As with what seems to be almost all Belgian wafflers, the grids aren't removable for cleaning. The theory is that they don't have to be, and one should just be able to sweep off the crumbs, but no waffler I've ever had has really worked well that way. I didn't lower my rating as a result of this factor, which is nearly universal.
I gave the product 3 stars because I wouldn't buy one again due to the issues noted, but I acknowledge that another reviewer might well give it a higher rating because the 'cons' didn't matter as much to them.
