Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Presto 3510 FlipSide Belgian Waffle Maker

Customer Review: Dead after less than 2 years.
Summary: 1 Stars

We had high hopes for this little wonder after our other waffle maker did not perform. At first we loved the crisp tasty waffles it made in about 2 and a half minutes. The timer was a little waffely though. Battery driven and oddly separate from the waffle maker. It was fairly useless.
Yesterday it died in the middle of waffle-making. Took one out, put another in and nothing.

Autopsy follows:

Being a tinkerer, I wondered what was the cause of death. Could it be fixed, saved perhaps? A loose connection? A bad thermostat. I rounded up my screw driver set, voltmeter, and got to work. The bottom came off easily and revealed a circuitboard for the autonomous timer. No way it could be the problem. The rest of the wires led from the outlet wire into a couple of orange 'twisty' connectors and into the hinge assembly. A blue wire led out and over the other side to power the LED along with a ground. No issues so far, everything looked clean and happy.

I took apart the top of the wafflemaker by unscrewing 4 screws in the waffle iron itself. The lid popped off easily. Instantly I noticed that unlike the majority of the wire sheathed with white insulated covering, the sheathing on the wires coming up from the hinge assembly was BROWNish. I examined the actual wire underneath but saw no obvious breaks or signs of burning.

I set my voltmeter to stun (actually ohms) and measured the resistance across the entire heating coil assembly, thermostat included. It measured 6.9ohms which basically meant it was completing the circuit. For comparisons sake and to rule out a more devastating possible cause, I took the cover off the other side and examined the other heating coil. It was fine, and measured the same with my volt/ohm meter. By the way, measuring from the outlet wire showed the circuit as open or not complete.

I did not have the desire to completely remove the wires and coils so I assume the wire leading from the orange twisty to the coil assembly is bad. I could possibly replace it but its probably not worth my time to take the entire assembly apart and rewire.

Sad really. It was a great wafflemaker but I have no use for wafflemakers that do not last - especially since we only used it around once a month, usually less.

I will likely contact the company with my story, but I don't expect my sympathy. Presto-Deado... RIP

Customer Review: I'M MAKE'N WAFFLES! (and i'm no donkey)
Summary: 5 Stars

Inspired by a recent stay at a hotel that provided a continental breaksfast w/Ready-Made Batter and a Waffle Maker, I decided to see what was available online. Reasonable Price and High Customer Review are the criteria I use when making any purchase. I was close to ordering a Waffle Maker that was priced approx. twice the price of this one and decided to go with the less expensive option (under $40) due to the great reviews so many people gave it. I ordered it with (3) cans of the Waffle Mix that came up by default.

Here are my findings...

1. When you set the timer for 3 mins & 30 seconds, even after a 3rd waffle-in-a-row was made, they were all golden brown and perfect!

2. The Timer does not beep when you need to flip it over half-way throught the baking process. With the Presto Waffle Maker, you set the timer for the entire cooking duration and flip the Maker immediately after pouring in the batter. When the timer beeps, Eat!

3. I oiled the grids once prior to using and should not have to oil again. Cleaning was simple after the Maker cooled down after use.

4. I wish the timer used direct electricity as opposed to batteries. It's not a big deal, just disconnected from the overall coolness of the unit.

5. I don't think the timer turns off, but is an lcd screen so uses very little battery.

6. My children and I all ate (1) waffle each, two of us used syrup and one used butter only and ate nothing again until dinner time! We love the taste and will likely make waffles a Saturday or Sunday ritual.

7. The Mix I purchased requires (1) Egg per waffle.

8. It's compact and simple to store in a cabinet and if you want to show off, leave it on the counter.

9. I highly recommend the Presto Flipside Waffle Maker, but I must qualify and let you know, I bought it 2 weeks ago. (Aug 2008).

I thought I might mention that I have owned this waffle maker for over a year (NOV 2009 now) and we still love it and use it fairly often. Not weekly, more like monthly, but when we do the waffles come out perfect!

Customer Review: Make waffles just like they do in the restaurants
Summary: 4 Stars

I received the Presto 03510 FlipSide Belgian Waffle Maker as a gift and I love it. Previously I use to use the old fashion waffle make like the Proctor-Silex 26500 Morning Baker Belgian Waffle Baker my waffles always came out soggy in the middle and too hard on the outside. Now with the Presto Flipside Waffle maker, my waffles come out come out golden brown with a crunchy outside and light and fluffy in the inside.

First time I used it I made the mistake of doubling my recipe since I thought four waffles would not be enough to feed a family of four. One waffle will actually feed two people since they are so thick! Make sure to use one cup of batter to make each waffle. No need to use non-stick spray since the non-stick/Teflon surface is easy to use and clean. The cooked waffles will lift out with ease and you can use just a damp towel or paper towel to wipe off the crumbs, no scrubbing required.

I use Golden Malted Pancake & Waffle Flour, Original, 33-Ounce Cans (Pack of 3) and my waffles taste and look just like the ones you order in a restaurant. Just allow the waffle maker to reach the correct temperature (light will go off) and pour one cup of batter. Close the lid, set the timer then flip over to ensure batter is evenly distributed before the batter cooks/sets. Since I use the Golden Malted Pancake and Waffle mix, I set the cooking timer to 4 minutes.

On the negative side, I do not understand why they did not make the timer run off the electrical current instead of using one AA battery. Also I did not like the construction of the red pull-out tab to use to store the unit in a upright position. The tab is made of a flimsy plastic and does not keep it tightly closed, I just store it flat.

Overall I love it for it's function, durability and restaurant-style waffles.

Customer Review: Beautiful Waffles, but timer was a bust...
Summary: 4 Stars

I absolutely love belgian waffles, but at nearly $10 a pop for IHOP, they had become a bit of a delicasy. So off I go on a quest to find the perfect belgian waffle maker... On a budget of course!!! After much tedious research and hours of internet sleuthing, I came across this baby. Not only were the reviews great, but it was only $35 bucks and shipping was free. Of course I ordered it. It arrived fairly quickly and it was time to put it to the test. While I awaited its arrival, I found a great belgian waffle recipe and waited. I prepared the batter with precision and plugged it in, and popped the battery into the timer (inconvenient to say the least). Fired it up and set the timer for 4 minutes as instructed in the manual. After 2 minutes I flipped it and started the countdown. The waffles were PERFECT. Crisp on the outside thick and fluffy, warm and delicious on the inside. That one was for my daughter, so imagine my eagerness to finish my own. I poured the batter in and went to set the timer, but couldn't read the numbers. WTF??? I thought maybe the iron had gotten to hot or the battery slipped or something, so I resulted to using my oven timer. After 2 minutes I flipped it and looked at the timer and it was not working at all. HOwever, again the waffle was PERFECT. Most delicious one I ever put in my mouth. Cooked to perfection. The following day I replaced the battery with a fresh one to see if that was the problem, but it was dead.

Here comes the dilemma. I am not disappointed enough to return it because it is Friday and guess what my baby has requested for breakfast Saturday morning... U got it Waffles. Just like the ones we had the other night. I will keep it, unless it dies completely and just use a clock or portable timer. Plus the upright storage is great and it is easy to clean. The only reason for the 4 star rating is the timer issue. It the timer had died after maybe 5 uses, I would have given it five stars. Hope this was helpful sorry for the long drawn out story, but it got the point across.

Customer Review: This is the Real Deal. Presto gets it right,...Again.
Summary: 5 Stars

I got this Belgian Waffle Iron from my kids for Christmas (2008), and so far I love it. I requested this particular model for three reasons:
1. Both the Presto Griddle and the Presto Deep Fryer that I've owned for 3 and 10 years respectively are great products, that consistently work well, and hold up to the rigors regular use.

2. Other Amazon reviews (which taken as a whole, I rely on quite a bit for honest reporting)

3. Price. Hands down, I am getting Gourmet restaurant quality Belgian Waffles out of a forty dollar machine.

I use Brand name and Store Brand Pancake/Waffle mixes and this little Presto cranks out a really nice waffle, regardless. The "FlipSide" and heating watts are what make this gadget such a success. Once it is hot enough, the light goes out, you set the timer, pour in the batter, close the lid, and you hear the first side start to sizzle. Then you just grab the handle and flip it to the other side, and gravity and heat does the rest! In three to three and a half minutes, you have one great waffle. No kidding here, it is THAT easy.

The waffle pops right out when you grab it with a fork or small spatula and it leaves the cooking surface almost clean. I genltly wipe it off with a damp cloth, but leave a little oil on there to season the non-stick metal.

I would give this four and a half stars instead of five only because I found it strange that they didn't intergrate the timer with the corded power supply. It requires a AAA battery instead, and there is no way to turn it off. But the upside is that the timer is super simple to set and is loud enough to catch your attention while you're cleaning up and getting the next batch ready.

In simplest terms folks, this thing works very well for the price, and if Presto's other products are any indication, my kids and I will be enjoying tasty Belgian Waffles from this machine for a good long time.

Why pay more? This even looks as "high-end" as a lot of the snooty models.
