Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Presto 1781 23-Quart Aluminum Pressure Cooker/Canner

Customer Review: Ordering my second!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been canning for 30 years and did all this past years canning (approximately 400 jars) with this canner. I love it! I love being able to see exactly where the pressure is, being able to double stack jars and especially that is quiet. Before this I used a jiggle pressure canner, so had to guess by the number of jiggles how high the pressure was. This one is very easy to use, just be smart and don't leave it unattended. Once the pressure is where you want it, it is pretty easy to maintain. It is very tall and I am short, so care must be taken when getting jars out or emptying the canner if still hot, I burnt my arm the first time but learned the lesson. The only problem I have with this canner is that it is my daughters...so I'm ordering one for me this time!

Customer Review: Nice product and it arrived in two days!! Yes, two days!
Summary: 5 Stars

We ordered this Presto cooker/canner from Amazon on a Sunday and it arrived on Tuesday. That's great service. It item is very nice. We wanted to be sure we had a pressure *canner* and not just a pressure *cooker* so we ordered this one. It's really big and sturdy. This was my first canner and I thought it was easy enough to use and it seemed SAFE to use too. The instructions were easy to follow and all the items I canned (tomatoes, stewed tomatoes, garden green beans, and apples) turned out just like we remember them when my mom and my husband's mom did canning. My mother-in-law said she had to soak the gasket on her canner for a long time before using but the one I ordered didn't require that. I like my canner and so does my husband. It was a good investment.

Customer Review: Presto 23 Quart Pressure Cooker/Canner
Summary: 3 Stars

The item arrived as pictured. I have not had a chance to use it yet. These are the drawbacks: 1. Item was not well packed but arrived with no scratches or dents, 2. Item has a film of oil or grease on it..for protection, I assume...but no instructions as to how to remove this film, and 3. and most important there is a warning label inside the pot warning against using the cooker on a propane fueled "turkey cooker". This was NOT mentioned in the description of the item. My main purpose of having this item was to use it outdoors on such a heating unit. I have not received an answer yet saying why I can't heat the item in this way. 4. Item is made in China and I wish it weren't...I don't trust that it will last.

Customer Review: Excellent Time Saver
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this pressure cooker because I can about 80-100 jars of homemade pasta sauce each week, so I was looking for something that would help the process move as quickly and easily as possible. I've used it about 20 times already and it's gone without a hitch each time.

The pot fits 20 pint sized jars as advertised, but for those who haven't been able to squeeze in more than 18, the trick is to put two jars into the center once there is some water in the pot. There is no way you'll be able to accomodate 10 jars per row if you attempt to do it when they are dry. In addition, I have found that 7 quarts of water is the perfect amount of liquid for canning 20 jars in this pot. Hope this helps. :)

Customer Review: Review of Presto 23-qt Pressure Cooker/Canner
Summary: 5 Stars

I love this canner. My mother used to can everything from food to rocks and grass it seemed at the time. As a kid,I shelled more peas, snapped more beans and scraped more new potatoes than I ever thought necessary! Now I appreciate what she did and I'm trying to follow suit. This item was a total success. It was very easy to use and worked as advertised. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to bring the country back to their kitchen. Canned goods at the store might be easier but nothing tastes better on a cold winter day than the vegetables you put up yourself out of your own garden in the summer. The bonus to this was buying it online from Amazon, I got it cheaper than I could locally and it came quickly.
