Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Presto 1781 23-Quart Aluminum Pressure Cooker/CannerCustomer Review: It is not your mother's pressure canner! Summary: 5 Stars
I love this pressure canner, it isn't the canner that my mother had. There are no worries that this will accidently explode on you, this canner is completely save with it's unique safety features. This canner hasn't been off my stove since the start of canning season. This is a very heavy gauge metal and will last for many years to come.
The manual contained instructions for the slight assembly required and several recipes. So far I have made jelly, jams, canned pate, crushed tomatoes, marina sauce, and spaghetti sauce with meat, relish, and pickles. This has done a fantastic job each time. You can stack a ton of jars in this pressure canner so you don't have to do just a few jars at a time.
This will be a canner that I know will be the last one that I will ever need. It is safe with two over pressure releases. I love this canner and look forward to many years of service along with many tasty meals.
Customer Review: This thing is a monster Summary: 5 Stars
I've had this unit for more than 3 years, primarily to can tomatoes each year. I usually do pints as they keep fresher after opening (takes less time for us to go through it) and this guy can handle a big load of 20 jars. If you are like me you want to jam on through the processing part of the canning so the bigger the better. You do need a stove than can handle this guy with a high output and big burners, otherwise you'll wait forever for it to get to temperature. I've even broke it out a couple of times to pressure cook the turkey carcass after Thanksgiving to make soup. Nothing is better for creating a stock in no time flat than a pressure cooker. The downside is clean up. It's so big it barely fits in the sink. I have recently added a small 6 Qt version for doing cooking in. But when it comes to canning don't even mess with water boiling methods or smaller units. This streamlines the whole canning process.
Customer Review: Love it! Summary: 5 Stars
I was using another brand pressure cooker for the past 10 years or more with nothing but aggravation. I have been canning for about 40 years and the past canner would rarely seal right even with new rubber seals etc. I have used this new Presto several times now with no problems at all. I just love it. You do need to watch the pressure as it can rise faster than expected, but I have turned down the heat when it did go over 11 pounds and all my jars still turned out fine and look lovely. No water leakages or breakages. I also have a glass stove top and it works terrific. I can eye the bottom of this canner since it is made also for glass tops and it works out perfect on my larger burner. I have been canning 7 quart jars at a time. I haven't tried stacking pints yet, but I know you can't stack the quarts. I would highly recommend this pressure cooker. It is simple and safe and works great!
Customer Review: Presto vs All American Summary: 2 Stars
I couldn't decide between the Presto or the All American, so I bought them both, intending to send one back. At the time I placed my order, Amazon was not selling the All American 921, so I had to order it from an outside vendor. I have only done boiling water bath canning before and had some fears of pressure canners. Reading the negative reviews of the Presto unit, where reviewers describe pressure gauges fly across the kitchen, etc., did not help. The All American canner is built like a tank, I have much more confidence in it than the Presto. I didn't actually use the Presto canner before deciding to send it back, so can't speak to its performance, but had I been able to compare these two units side by side in a store, I definitely would have chosen the All American (and saved the twelve dollars it cost to return the Presto canner to Amazon).
Customer Review: A #1 Canner Summary: 5 Stars
Last canning season I only had one canner so I had borrowed 2 canners from my mom. I was able to put up an abundance of food from our family garden. This year my mom is able to do her own canning so I had to give her canners back. I knew that doing any where near what I did last year would be impossible with only one canner. I bought the Presto canner from amazon which was the best price and it came on the date indicated. I will be taking it to the extension office to have checked out as well as my old one and I will be a canning fool again. The Presto 23 quart pressure canners have always worked very well and I do not foresee any problems with my new one. Follow directions given in the manual and you can have a fun, safe and profitable canning season. Remember, there is NO room for shortcuts in safe food processing.
