Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Presto 05420 FryDaddy Electric Deep Fryer

Customer Review: Unsafe!
Summary: 1 Stars

We ordered this to use to make french fries now and then. It arrived quickly, with no manual inside (original packaging ordered directly from Amazon). We figured we just plug it in and get frying...

I plugged it in and poured the oil in and started working on the rest of dinner. I have small children so I thought I should probably move the fryer further in on the counter, so I pushed it with my thumb and forefinger...Two 2nd degree burns and a trip to the emergency room later, this thing is going in the trash!

How could a name brand fryer not have a warning that the black matte finish on the outside of the unit gets as hot as the inside?!?!? I just assumed (wrongly, I know) that the sides were insulated and that as long as I was careful not to splash the oil, I'd be fine.

I'm shocked.

Customer Review: Very good little fry cooker
Summary: 4 Stars

Works great! First batch of food was terrific. I love that you can store & reuse the oil you cook with right in the Fry Daddy (cover included). Cute little handle, cute little spatula. It is small capacity (I was able to cook about 3.5 russet potatoes sliced as French fries at one time, max) but I only anticipate using it for side dishes anyways. The magnetic plug is a little weird, but okay. And there's no off/on switch, once it's plugged in, it's on, which I am okay with. Easy to store. Doesn't make a huge oily mess!! That was wonderful, easy clean-up. I give it a B+, happy with my purchase. Would have been happier if it had come with some sort of mini-cookbook for fry cookers, which I was half expecting, even though it does have some cooking information for different kinds of foods in the instruction manual.

Customer Review: Small, but mighty
Summary: 5 Stars

Amazingly well constructed, exceeded expectations, and is so easy to use - clean - store. I almost did not order, based upon a few recent negative reviews about the power level. After my scientist-engineer brain kicked in and ran a few calc's to determine the calculated heat at 120-volts versus 110-volts, I realized that they may not have been following manufacturers recommendations. The problem they most likely were having was operating at 110-volts rather than the REQUIRED 120-volts. The manual clearly and in bold states that you MUST operate at 120volts to obtain full temperature.
"Run, don't walk" to purchase this unit, as it is perfect for a 2-4 person family. For large families or groups, it may be on the small size; but, the size, quality, and price make it a must have utensil for every kitchen.

Customer Review: Extremely Dangerous
Summary: 1 Stars

I purchased this product a little while ago. When it broke, it broke in the most dangerous way imaginable. Suddenly the thermostat stopped cutting off the heating element. The oil (fresh vegetable oil) continued to heat (well beyond the smoking point) and ended up popping and exploding all over my kitchen. The room was so dangerous to enter that I had to cut off the circuit breaker to my entire kitchen in order to stop the nightmare. Presto's only solution was for ME to pay the shipping to send the product back to them and they may or may not be able to help me. Are you kidding me?!? They're lucky I was 15 feet away at the time and didn't get injured or they'd have a lawsuit on their hands. Please beware of the dangers associated with this product. Consider buying one with a lid or splatter screen instead.

Customer Review: Getting this for my mom for mother's day.
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm giving this to mom on Mother's Day. We have one and love it. It has a lid so you can reuse the oil. I recommend filling it to the line each time you cook. My mom makes eggrolls a lot and it takes forever using a pan because she has to keep turning the eggrolls over and it's sometimes undercooked and needs to burn a little to fully cook. With this, it's quick and the food is fully cooked. She's in her 70's and it would save her from backaches from slaving over her frying pan. We used it for tempura, fries, eggrolls and hashbrowns. always a good outcome. Took me forever to find a good Tempura recipe, 2/3 cup milk, 1/2 cup flour, 3/4 tsp baking powder, 1/4 tsp salt. use it for broccoli and cauliflower and shrimp and onion rings, cheese curds (not just any cheese.) Serve it with soy sauce. Yummy.
