Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Presto 05420 FryDaddy Electric Deep FryerCustomer Review: No more McDonald fries! Summary: 5 Stars
I got this item at Walmart on black Friday for a bit less and I love this deep fryer! It's small enough to be portable, but big enough to feed maybe two people per frying. I used to oven bake my fries, which took way too long. With this fryer, it takes about 10-15 seconds to heat up, and about less than 5 minutes to brown my fries (and i love em golden brown!). I've never gotten a splatter to the face. The curvy spatula it comes with may look cheap, but it actually makes grabbing all the fries very easy. Some people might prefer tongs though. I use this with Ore Ida's Fast Food Fries, and now I can't wait to try it with other stuff like fried chicken! Heard Twinkies are actually good fried... Anyways, from what I've read in the 1 star areas, people are concerned with how easily it detaches from the magnetic cord, but why on earth are people messing around and moving it while it is frying anyways? I've never had a problem with the cord. It truly fry things up very quickly and I can't wait to see what else I can make with it.
Customer Review: Good for my frying needs Summary: 5 Stars
I fry things about 1-2 times a week, and I liked my fried things to be very crispy yet not laden with oil. I wanted something that would truly get to a hotter frying temperature, to make my frying quicker and more "healthful"...(healthy frying....is that an oxymoron or what?) Because I don't fry THAT often, I just needed something simple. I like this fryer because the heat-up time is very quick, and there is much less splatter then if you were frying in a pot. When I fry, I usually do your typical fried foods: fries, onion rings, wontons, etc. I have not tried to do anything else in it yet. If the oil is fairly clean after I use it, I will put it in the refridgerator, but not keep more than a week. This is a very simple fryer. If you are a more heavy-duty fryer, then you might want to look into a fancier one. The exterior is not cool-touch, and there is no basket. If you only do small batches of things, and don't really fry that much, or even if you do, then this will be a great fryer for you.
Customer Review: Unsuitable Summary: 1 Stars
On first use this unit heated oil to 400°F. During cooking it never dropped below 380°F. Because it was so high, I checked with two thermometers.
My Chicken Fried Steak came out a mahogany color, and the crust had a definite burnt flavor. The frying oil was burnt, not reusable, and oil is not cheap.
Most authoritative cookbooks recommend 320° to 365°F for deep frying. The highest smoke point of readily available shortening is around 350-360°F, Crisco recommends not to exceed 365°F, only canola and peanut oils are above 400°F.
I would put the ideal temperature at no more than 350°F, 50°F less than this fryer.
Presto Customer Service said I should only use canonla oil (contrary to the enclosed instructions) and if that was not satisfactory, I should return the unit.
I was disappointed and surprised after good reviews.
Customer Review: The daddy of fryers Summary: 5 Stars
If you preheat to the recommended 10 minutes, frying is a breeze. I place the fryer on my stove under the air/vent with the fan on, use a splatter screen after the food is placed in the fryer and the house does not get that heavy fried food smell. I have used fry daddy's for over 20 years and have never had an oil fire from overheating. These fryers are hard to destroy, they just keep on going and working. In fact I am using the same one for 20 years. I have replaced the cord, other than that, the element still works fine. I do strain the oil when cooled and place in a plastic soda bottle in the refrigerator for a few more uses and just add new oil to the fill line as needed. Of course fish oil should be used only for frying fish. All and all, even at the new price for the four cup oil fry daddy, they last forever and do the job of frying without a high priced ticket.
Customer Review: Nice Little Fryer, Wish It Heated Higher. Summary: 3 Stars
I like this unit because it is small and can be stored out of the way when not in use. When in use, it doesn't take up much space on the counter. Watch out, though, as the exterior gets very hot - this is not a "cool touch" fryer. I would give this 4 stars if it heated up past 350 degrees. I used a candy thermometer and the max temperature is 350, which is just enough for frying foods.
Use small batches because if you load it up with food, the temp of your oil will drop, which will cause you to have to wait a while between batches for the oil to heat up again.
5 stars for small compact design and that it doesn't take too much oil - just 4 cups of oil or shortening.
3 stars for only average heat. I could use 25-50 degrees more heat to keep up the cooking temperature when I put in cold items like fried calimari or potatos.
