Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Presto 05100 Microwave Bacon CookerCustomer Review: I love this thing!! Summary: 5 Stars
I've had this microwave bacon cooker for about a year now and I LOVE IT!!! It is SOOO nice to use ONE paper towel in the microwave (just to lay over the top) and not tons of paper towels on a plate (the old microwave way).
I personally think that frying bacon in a fry pan is a MESS, splattering all over, and rarely uniformly cooked. The old microwave way on paper towels was messy too, lots of towels wasted as I mentioned earlier.
Cooking bacon on these racks drains the fat, cooks much more evenly, and I think the finished product is excellent. Frankly I don't understand the person who gave a negative review who said that pan fried bacon tasted better. Why, because it's sitting in all of that grease? I don't get it.
When I'm done with the cooker, I take it apart and put it in the dishwasher. EASY EASY EASY. The dishwasher does the rest. If I had to wash it by hand that might be messy, but on the other hand, cleaning a frying pan by hand is no picnic either with all of the grease and the cooked on bits. I used to dread the mess of bacon, but now it doesn't faze me, seriously, this cheap little thing rocks.
It's also easy and light weight to handle. You can easily handle it with hot grease in it and it pours our of the corner very neatly and safely.
Best invention for bacon yet...other than having someone else make it for me.
Customer Review: Very Crisp Turkey Bacon Summary: 5 Stars
My turkey bacon came out even better than pan frying! It was evenly cooked and very crisp.
You can cook 8-10 pieces of bacon depending on the width of your bacon slices. I can only fit 8 slices of the regular Butterball turkey bacon, but the scalloped edge makes it wider than most bacon.
You can control the crispness of your bacon simply by shortening or lengthening the cooking time. The instructions state between 40-90 seconds per slice of bacon. I have a 1250 watt microwave and my bacon comes out perfectly crisp at exactly 40 seconds per slice every time.
To cook the bacon, you simply drape it over the two plastic "tents", place a paper towel over the bacon, and microwave to your desired doneness. After removing from the microwave, you simply slide a knife under the slices and lift on to a serving plate. Since all of the fat drips down into the tray, there is no need to blot off grease or rest on paper towels. You can eat it immediately.
The tray and plastic pieces have been extremely easy to clean. The plastic tent pieces are the same size as the tray so they fit neatly inside during storage.
Customer Review: Exceeded Expectations Summary: 4 Stars
I had tried bacon microwave gadgets before and gave up on them. This looked like a new angle, so my curiosity was aroused. The use is simple, lay bacon over one or two racks (depending on how many slices you want), cover with a paper towel, and run for as long as your particular microwave takes to get it brown. My very small very weak microwave takes about 4 minutes for 3 slices. Most will be faster.
This cooker is ideal for up to about 6 slices of bacon (3 on each rack). The bacon I get can fit about 4 to a rack, but I have found the cooking time increases a lot if I max out its capacity.
If I only need 3 or 4 slices of bacon, I wouldn't consider anything else. It's fast and very easy to clean. The rims are never hot when removing from the microwave and the grease (if enough is accumulated) is easy to pour into a grease keeper.
The texture of microwaved bacon is not as crisp as on a griddle. The result is quite tasty even if it isn't firm enough to break into bits.
I'm actually considering getting one for the RV and a spare in case either one gets broken or confiscated by a visiting child.
Customer Review: Great bacon! Summary: 4 Stars
This makes great bacon in the microwave, and all of the fat / grease falls to the bottom so it's easy to clean up. The stickers proclaiming the device's origin fell off after a couple of times in the washing machine, but those don't really matter at all to the function of the thing. I really like the design of the triangle stands which make it easy to take the bacon off with a knife after it's been cooked. I've tried three different bacon cookers in my life - one that had little "trees" that held the bacon (and cooked like 12 strips at once!), one of the kind that looks like a plate with ridges, and this one, and the presto microwave bacon cooker is the best of the three all-around - it is easy to clean, assemble and disassemble, and dishwasher safe, and the grease is easy to remove and pour into a container (don't put it down the drain!). If this one suddenly stopped working, I would buy another one.
It's quite durable - In our household we use it twice a day for about three weeks constantly and we haven't had any issues with it at all.
Customer Review: The only way you can hate this is if you are a pig! Summary: 5 Stars
I love bacon. There, I said it. But bacon is greasy and salty and terrible for you. Maybe that's why some religions outlaw it. (Just kidding).
Regardless, I still jones for it, but not the nasty fat and grease it cooks in. But this little Presto device is quite spiffy. You drape 4-5 bacon slices over each of the two tent-like devices in the pan, cover with one paper towel, and cook 40-90 seconds per slice. That's it. All the fat and grease drips down into the pan (and it's a surprising amount too!). The whole thing is top-rack dishwasher safe.
Downsides:
1. Bacon is still bacon. This cuts the grease way down, but the salt is still there. Oh well.
2. You are limited to ~8-10 slices at a time. May not be enough space if you've got a huge crew to feed.
I guess that's about it.
It comes apart and stacks inside itself to be neatly stored away for future usage.
I think bacon lovers will like this device. It's elegance in plastic simplicity.
Enjoy!
