Customer Review: great concept, fails to deliver

Not real impressed with this product. I chose it because of the Orville Redenbacher endorsement and the price was right.
First, the popcorn is dry, bland and not very tasty. I've tried several brands of popcorn and even smothered it in butter or other flavorings. I've tried popping with very little oil and with the max amount. The feel and taste of the popcorn cooked in this popper is substandard and just not worth the effort.
Second, the container has a ridged well in the bottom where this power cup disc is placed but oil will leak past the disc into this well which is very difficult to clean. The entire bowl stays greasy and no matter how much soap and hot water I use, it will not get squeaky clean.
Third, the powercup discs claim that they can be used mutiple times and if you don't use oil to pop the popcorn, that disc IS reusable, but the popcorn is too dry and bland to pop oiless. When using even the smallest amount of oil, this paper disc becomes permeated with oil and even though they say you can just wipe it off, it still soaks in the oil and softens the paper and I'm not real fond of using a product that has had food residue on it for weeks. If you are using the bowl to eat from and have added any flavorings or butter, this furthers contaminates the disc. The discs are not too expensive in Walmart but on Amazon the price of S&H alone makes this product very expensive to use and maintain if you use it several times a month. I'm looking at other poppers that don't require that I buy extra parts just to continue using it. This popper would be useless if they no longer made the concentrator discs. In order to start a batch of popcorn you have to insert the powercup into the bowl and make sure it's seated properly, then twist on the power base and make sure it's tight, then you can add your popcorn and oil before adding the lid. That's a lof of parts to find put together.
Finally, when popping is done, be careful when removing the lid. There is a lot of steam and it is hot. The power base is extremely hot so be sure to remove it before using the bowl but also be aware that there is HOT oil in the well of the bowl so don't sit it on your lap or any heat sensitive surface.
In summary, you get what you pay for. Personally I'm going for slightly higher priced initially but cheaper in the long run product such as the West Bend 82306 Stir Crazy 6-Quart Popcorn Popper, Black . I haven't tried it but is has some great reviews. In the past, I've used the Whirley-Pop Stovetop Popcorn Popper for years. The kids loved taking turns with the handle and the popcorn is movie theatre good! I might just get both-the electric one for everyday use and the stove top one for camping, outside events and power outages (I live in hurricane country and it's hurricane season). But I won't buy another powercup. When I run out, all of this goes in the garbage.

Clean-up is easy too - everything is fully submersible and dishwasher safe with base removed.Sized to fit most microwave ovens, including compacts, this popcorn maker pops virtually every kernel of 3 quarts of popcorn in about 2-1/2 minutes. The popcorn maker uses two innovations that concentrate microwave radiation onto the popcorn. First is a removable base that locks onto the transparent bowl. Second is a disposable paper cup that fits into the bowl's bottom.
