Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Presto 04820 PopLite hot air popper

Customer Review: Poppin' Fun for Everyone!
Summary: 4 Stars

I manage a department of fun, hardworking employees. I purchased this popper exclusively for the office as my team loves popcorn. I thought it would be a fun treat for them.

Oh my.

Little did I know what would occur...we now have one or two popcorn parties every single day. THEY LOVE IT.

The popper itself is easy to use and very functional. It pops kernels quickly, and most kernels pop (of course, that also depends on the brand of popcorn one purchases). The popcorn comes out light, fluffy, and hot. Plus, it's so much lower in fat than the microwave kind, which is what my team was eating by the bucketloads.

The only negative is the sound. It is NOT a quiet machine. In fact, when the popping begins, the crew often takes the popper into an office and closes the door to lessen the noise factor. Popping time is short, though, so it's not a distraction for a very long time.

Cleanup is simple, particularly since there is no oil involved.

I am thrilled with my purchase - and so is my team!

Customer Review: Very happy with this corn popper
Summary: 5 Stars

My son has been asking for a hot air corn popper for at least a year now, so I finally bought this for him and was quite pleased with the flavor quality of fresh hot air popcorn vs. microwave popcorn. I also like the ability to control the salt, butter, and other seasonings so easily. A neighbor girl came over and asked for cinnamon sugar popcorn which was easy to whip up, and had I not had this popper there's not a chance in the world I would have had microwave cinnamon sugar popcorn on hand.

The other benefit is that hot air popped corn is healthier than microwave popcorn, and costs significantly less.

We did end up with a few unpopped kernals, but that's to be expected. The plastic butter melter didn't wash up too well in the dishwasher, so that had to be washed by hand. Since purchasing this we've made all kinds of gourmet flavored popcorn with the on hand seasonings and recently tried and liked Kernel Season's Popcorn Seasoning, Nacho Cheddar, 2.85-Ounce Jars (Pack of 12). Parmesan cheese works well also.

Customer Review: convenience but no taste
Summary: 3 Stars

I used to own a similar air popper that we literally used to death, and then suffered, popcorn-less for years because I assumed air poppers were obsolete. We experimented with alternate ways of making popcorn, such as in a paper bag in a microwave, which produces decent results, but wastes a lot of paper bags. Anyway, I was very excited to find this popper, but in the years I'd lived without an air popper, I'd forgotten how dry and tasteless air-popped popcorn is. Even the brown-paper-bag-in-the-microwave method makes popcorn that tastes better than what we get with this popper. On the other hand, when I was used to the air popper, I thought the popcorn tasted fine, so I guess it is a matter of getting used to the flavor all over again. At least now I don't have to worry about my kids burning oil to the bottom of my pans, or wrecking my microwave. With this popper, making popcorn is easy enough that my 11 year old can do it unsupervised and I suppose a generous amount of melted butter disguises the dryness.

Customer Review: Not what I'd hoped for...
Summary: 3 Stars

How I wish I were among those reviewers who were able to rave about this product! I was hoping to have found the Alpha and Omega of poppers. Rather, the Presto PopLite is merely...adequate, and just barely at that.

Pros:
It's quiet.
It's fairly quick.
The kernels that get popped are nice and fluffy (note foreshadowing).

Cons:
The hot air blows straight up, expelling a significant number of unpopped kernels throughout the popping cycle, particularly at the very beginning. I see this as a serious flaw, since it's supposed to, you know, pop the popcorn. I've tried popping cheapo generic, Orville R., and fancy purple popcorn, with the same result. I've also tried popping the fancy, smaller-kerneled corn, with the results being predictably disasterous.
The popping chamber holds only a half cup at a time. My old popper ably popped twice that amount.

In short, for those searching for that Holy Grail of hot air poppers, I'd say...keep looking!

Customer Review: No More Microwave Popcorn
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the second hot air popcorn popper that we have owned and this one is superior to our first one (over 15 years ago). Like most people, we fell into the microwave popcorn age and thought nothing of it, other than the occasional complaint about the taste and the funny smell. After reading the reviews about the Presto Poplite Hot Air Corn Popper, we decided to try it. We are glad we did as we will not go back to microwave popcorn again. There are some minor issues, as described in other review, but the inputs from those reviewers have helped us to deal with those issues. For us, the best things about this product are as follows:
1. Its ease of use and clean up.
2. Our popcorn tastes like popcorn again instead of some flavored chewy substance.
3. We know exactly what is on our popcorn and it is not some unpronounceable chemical that may or may not be good for us.
4. Because we know what is on our popcorn, we don't feel guilty about eating too much popcorn.
