Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Presto 01362 6-Quart Stainless Steel Pressure Cooker

Customer Review: Very tasty way of using less energy!
Summary: 5 Stars

Although I bought this pressure cooker because I thought my daughter Heather has good judgement and she uses one...I also remember growing up with my mom, Rosalind, cooking so many delicious meals with one. I have made Italian Beef and a pot roast. OMG, were they good! You can use less energy, save time and retain all the vitamins while cooking a warm, comforting dinner for your family. As I write this, I listen to our wonderful Roosevelt-esque president, Barrack Hussein Obama. I have heard political analysts comparing him to no less than President Lincoln, et al, Right now we are forced to getting back to basics by our economy. Let's all use products like a pressure cooker and our inborn, American, common sense and maintain this "basics" way of cooking and living and perhaps we'll never have to go back to an inflated economy and its subsequent fall. Ok, I might have gone off track but buy this pressure cooker or one like it and make some warm, quick, family meals and live the good life that we have so much access to but possibly are not appreciating and enjoy your life.

Customer Review: price is right, does the job.
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a no-frills pressure cooker. It could be a little bigger, but it does the job very well.

When 'boiling' food in a traditional pot, the food cannot exceed 212 degrees F (the temperature at which water boils). Under pressure, the boiling point rises... in this pressure cooker to about 250 degrees F. This means, of course, that food cooks faster (the reason people normally think to buy a pressure cooker), but the higher temperature also allows other 'reactions' to take place while cooking... For instance, the tougher fibers in meat will convert to gelatin, making the meat more tender. As a result, pressure cookers are great for braised dishes with tough meats, such as chili. For these purposes, this pressure cooker rocks.

Larger pressure cookers can also be used for canning (because the higher temperatures can kill more bad things. This pressure cooker really is not large enough for this task. If you are not a canner though, compare the prices of this against those larger models... I think you will be back looking at this one.

Customer Review: "Cooking Times" may be a bit deceptive.
Summary: 4 Stars

The so-called "cooking times" seem short and very fast, but they don't take into account the time it takes to build up the pressure, which is often longer than the actual stated cooking times. For example, to cook potatoes the time is given as 8 minutes, but it takes 10 minutes to build up the full pressure before you're to start timing, so it's really 18 minutes. Plan accordingly. It's even worse for recipes done in parts where you cool it down to add a second step or things that would over cook if added at the beginning - then you have to build to pressure twice.

The cooking rack at the botton is nice, but no easy way to extract it when it's hot, or thicken gravy, so you have to empty it, reclaim the juice, thicken that, and add back the main dish and stir on low heat.

Since you can't fill the thing more than half way or three fourths to the top (for safety) I sort of wish I got the 8 quart one so a entire cut up chicken and vegetables wouldn't be pushing the limit.

Still, it's easy to clean up and use.

Customer Review: MADE IN CHINA CHINA CHINA CHINA!!!!
Summary: 4 Stars

Been using pressure cookers for years - grew up on a farm - pressure cookers abundant.
Needed to replace the 30+ year old Mirro aluminum one.
Still have my aluminum 2 1/2 qt Mirro but wanted a bigger one.
So I bought this one to try. Cookers are all basically the same.
HOWEVER -----

I wish SOMEone would have posted SOMEwhere that this product is
- wait for it - - -

MADE IN CHINA CHINA CHINA CHINA CHINA!

Oh I get it - if we are told it is not USA made, we will look elsewhere.

What a rip! I am so very disappointed that we cannot purchase something made in the USA anymore.
Thanks to all our government officials by helping every one on this planet but our own people.

We cannot even buy a cooking pot for cripes sake!

Let's see if in another 30 years I still have this CHINESE pot.

For cryin' out :o(

Customer Review: 10 stars for Presto!
Summary: 5 Stars

I wanted this 6 quart Presto Stainless Steel Pressure Cooker for Christmas, but sadly Santa did not bring it. So I bought it myself with some Christmas money received. It's magnificent, period. My wife and I love the tasty dishes we have enjoyed so far and look forward to having them again, plus are eager to try several others in the handy recipe book. It cooks so fast: spaghetti sauce that looks and tastes like it has simmered all day, but cooks in EIGHT MINUTES. Meat that falls off the bone in about 25 minutes minus the prep time. My mother used to use a pressure cooker. Now I know why. You can make an entire meal, meat, veggies, potatoes all at once in minutes. I don't know how I ever got by without this great kitchen tool. I love to cook and I love it even more with this nifty cooker, which was not very expensive either. I did a lot of shopping around and discovered that this Presto cooker was a best buy for the money and an excellent pressure cooker at any price. ( Amazon allows only 5 star ratings, but I give this baby TEN STARS.)
