Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Presto 01362 6-Quart Stainless Steel Pressure Cooker

Customer Review: very useful
Summary: 5 Stars

I used this pressure cooker twice in the first week I got it. The very first time was THE DAY I got it. It is quality! It breaks down an entire chicken in twenty minutes with such flavor. I used the breast of turkey recipe in the book that came with it and it was done to completion very quickly also. All of the other dishes for my March Thanksgiving meal were still cooking long after that turkey breast was done. I'll start the turkey last next time.
To think of the saved energy of a low setting on the top of the stove for twenty minutes compared to the couple hours of roasting in the oven. To me that's great, considering energy costs are on the rise.
The last one I had was smaller and the lid eventually fell apart (differant brand). I can tell this one is going to be around for a long time.
I like that I'll be able to do a little bit of pressure canning in this bigger one too. I couldn't in my old one. Water bath canning was what I was limited to before and have wanted to pressure can small jars of produce that needed to be, but one of those huge pressure canners, my mom used, is just too big for my needs.
I'm considering buying another for a friend who's wedding is coming up soon. If you want flavorful, home-cooked food, fast this has far better flavor and texture than something a microwave could do. Thanks so much.

Customer Review: PRESSURE COOKER FYIS
Summary: 4 Stars

Tips from many years of using pressure cookers in our family:

1. Hand wash - dishwashers tend to dry out sealing rings and make handles brittle. They become expensive to replace, and these parts are sometimes hard to find

2. I take a paper towel and wipe sealing ring with canola oil, after cleaning. Keeps rubber from drying out.

3. Never open pot while still steaming (contents will explode). Let steam decompress until no sound and no steam comes out when regulator is removed. My grandmother depressurized steam sooner by setting pot carefully in plugged shallow sink of water and making sure steam dissipated. (sound/regulator) before opening. (Disclaimer - I advise anyone against doing this, I am just stating an historical fact. Do not transport a hot pot, especially pressurized; extremely dangerous-what if you dropped it:O).

4. Do not overload beans (even pre-soaked) in pressure cooker.

5. I buy meats/poultry/seafood in bulk, wash, season and put in zip lock bags, and toss into freezer. When ready to cook, I put in pressure cooker (still frozen solid) with a small amount of water/broth (8 oz or less is fine for me, gravy-wise) and let cook for 40 minutes (or less) on mid to low heat. Frozen and tough cuts are soon ready to eat and are tender like butter.

Customer Review: Love this pressure cooker!
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this a few months ago and wanted to wait till I used it several times before I wrote a review. Well, I love it! I bought this because I saw Emeril Lagasse make several recipes in a pressure cooker on his show. Wow! This cooker is amazing. I've cooked several dishes in it, and every one of them has turned out delicious. I usually cook pot roast in a slow cooker for 6-8 hours depending on weight, but with this cooker you can do the same roast in only 45 minutes! It comes out the same; tender and juicy as if it was slow cooked for hours. I made chicken cacciatore in it last night, amazing! It only took 10 minutes to cook (about 2 to get desired pressure and then 8 min. with the knob rocking consistently). Wow again, it cooks food so much faster in less than half the time with the same results as if you were to cook for hours. My next dish is Emeril's spicy ginger baby back ribs. He has lots of recipes for pressure cookers. Besides, this presser cooker comes with a recipe book and the recipes are fabulous. Also, since the cooker is stainless steel, nothing sticks and clean up is a breeze. It hasn't tarnished, nicked, changed color or fouled up on me whatsoever. It still looks brand new, even through all the uses. I definitely recommend this product!

Customer Review: Perfect Bang For The Buck
Summary: 5 Stars

This is an excellent Pressure Cooker. It works perfect on my Induction Cooker. This is my second Presto Pressure cooker, the first one had wooden handles, and was made of aluminum (still in service). Aluminum not being compatible with Induction Cooking I got the Stainless Steel. The encapsulated bottom creates that perfect heat distribution for searing and browning. What an absolutely beautiful combination. The new sealing ring is a wonder all by its self when compared to the ones of the 1940's. Do I sound happy with this cooker, That's because I am. The first thing I cooked was a pot of Pinto beans,(see photo) the pressure cooker cooked them 14 times faster than a conventional pan. Clean up is a breeze, and to keep that just out of the box look I use Bar Keepers Friend. During assembling, use caution when attaching the handle to the lid as I twisted off one of the screws, which is not a problem or deterrent as Presto has great customer service, and sent a complete new replacement assembly. I shall be ordering a second one in the not too distant future. Thanks to Amazon.com for a fantastic buy. All Pros and No Cons. This review was written assuming the reader knows a little bit about Pressure Cooking. Pressure Cooking is Fast, Fun, and Flavorful. :)

Customer Review: Finally, a really good pressure cooker!
Summary: 5 Stars

I've owned 3 pressure cookers over the years, and all of them suffered from locking mechanisms that wouldn't actuate and let steam blast through until you shook the pots or pounded them with spoons to get them to actuate. But this cooker has a responsive mechanism that vents the air out and then actuates reliably as soon as the pressure begins to build up.

Beyond that, it's well-built, with a thick bottom to distribute heat and resist heat distortion. I expect this cooker to last longer than I will.

If you're uncertain about whether you should own a pressure cooker, here's my opinion: pressure cooking is the best way to cook vegetables, including potatoes, and the best way to cook rice, beans, or rice-and-beans. It's good for cooking hamburger for meat sauce, because there's no smoke and the grease drips into the cooker where it's easy to clean as long as the cooker is warm. There are some cool things you can do with chicken and it's an easy way to make puddings. I prefer the cooker for heating leftovers because they come out as if they're freshly cooked instead of dry and unevenly heated like you get from microwaves.

Thank you, Presto!
