Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Polder Dual Sensor Thermometer and TimerCustomer Review: If I could give it NO stars I would have. Buy something else Summary: 1 Stars
My first and only use was to cook a roast in the oven at 275 degrees and within the first 30 minutes it started to give me the wrong readings. I have had it a while but have not used it as it is only good for the oven. The statement on the inside instructions "WHEN COOKING IN A BARBECUE OR SMOKER, DO NOT USE AS A CONTINUOUS READ THERMOMETER, USE ONLY AS AN INSTANT READ THERMOMETER.", "5. DO NOT USE THIS UNIT TO MEASURE COOKING TEMPERATURES OVER 392◦F." as well as "WARRANTY EXCLUDES THERMOMETER PROBES." should be on the outside, letting people know this is only for the oven for continuous use and that the probes are junk. If you have to keep checking the meat in a smoker over many hours, a cheap $6.00 meat thermometer will work just fine other than letting out the heat. Why does the outside packaging say the reading range is 86◦ to 572◦ if you can only use to 392◦. I would say this is only a typo and they likely did a cut and paste on their lower temperature unit's instructions, but 275◦ in the oven killed mine so maybe not? Cut to the chase, look for a better unit and let me know when you find it.
Customer Review: A Wonderful Piece of Equipment Summary: 5 Stars
I'm really surprised at the number of people giving this Polder a poor review. I had one for 5-6 (?) years that just finally died on me. It got plenty of heavy use -- I make lots of barbecue, smoked pork loins, chickens, turkeys, fish -- the list goes on. I never cook a large piece of meat without this thermometer and I have never been disappointed.
Oven and smoker temperatures are notoriously unreliable (as are the thermometers built into most consumer smokers), and I swear by the ambient temperature measurements from this device. Prior to the unit's failure (after literally hundreds of cooks at temperatures ranging from 180-450 F), I never once found the temperature to be off -- I would submerge the probe in boiling water and both sensors would always read a rock solid 211-213 F.
I'm getting ready to buy a replacement and I have no hesitation whatsoever -- I have given these thermometers as gifts and will continue to recommend them to friends and family. There's no better product on the market and anyone to whom I have given one of these agrees.
Customer Review: Almost the perfect product Summary: 1 Stars
I purchased several of these units because they were the perfect product for smoking (aka barbecue). Based on the information provided they would allow me to monitor the internal temperature of the meat in the pit AND allow me to keep tabs on the ambient air around the meat inside the pit. What more could a serious barbecue enthusiast ask, right?Of the ones I purchased, only one reads the correct temperature after a single cook. Just one. Did I mention that I purchased six of them? In speaking with Polder customer service I was told that this unit was not designed for the application I describe. Instead, it is designed to take an instant reading in the meat while in the oven, and then remove the probe from the oven. WHAT? Why have the additional sensor? Why not just buy a temperature fork? Based on my experience with this product and the customer support, I cannot recommend this product. Honestly, I think the new probe units with the dual sensors might be defective.
Customer Review: Botchalism Don't Come 'Round Here ! Summary: 4 Stars
I'll start by saying that I am a terrible cook! I dont have experience, I only want to cook fancy meals and to make matters worse if the meat isnt burnt I just dont trust that its cooked well enough. They say for chicken you should slice it and see if the liquid coming out is clear - thats how you know its done... it never looks done to me for whatever reason it always looks pink! This thermometer has saved my cooking. It will tell you if your oven is really at the temprature you set it to (so if you arent sure your oven is heating properly this will help alot). The thermometer itself did get faulty on me once... but it was after my husband soaked it in hot water with the dirty dishes. I let it dry out for a day and I was back in business. Its really not fragile - but I would say you should wash it off rather than soak it or stick it in the dishwasher. Best of luck.. I highly reccomend it.
Customer Review: Awful Awful Awful Summary: 1 Stars
Apparently the entire Polder line is as bad as this piece of junk. The probe wire is incredibly sensitive and is destroyed by the slightest kink, water drop, or improper storage. I'm certainly not talking about heavy use -- I used mine three times and then it went haywire with readings all over the place before I had even stuck the probe into the food. I think mine was destroyed when I used a sponge to clean the probe and a few drops of water dripped onto the probe wire (it was never immersed in water, so this is all I could think of.) From what I've read elsewhere, the replacement probe is just as defective so buying them is a waste. Why Polder doesn't just construct a decent probe wire, I don't know. Until they do, please spend your money elsewhere and try your luck with a different brand (it can't be any worse) -- these problems are an epidemic at Polder.
