Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Polder Digital In-Oven Thermometer/Timer, GraphiteCustomer Review: One Flaw = Useless For Yogurt Making Summary: 4 Stars
This is a good product for the price . Easy to use intuitive controls , display easy to read , temperature is accurate . There is no on/off button but this isn't a big deal as the battery will probably still last for years even with it always on .
You can set the alarm to go off when it reaches whatever temperature you set it for and the alarm is nice and loud . The reason I got this was for yogurt making . I wanted to have an alarm to let me know when the milk had cooled to the proper temperature instead of having to check it every 15 minutes . One problem though : You can only use the temperature alarm feature when going *UP TO* a temperature . If you have the milk at 180 degrees and set the temperature alarm to go off at 115 degrees the alarm goes off immediately because the temp has already reached or surpassed 115 degrees . In other words this thermometer is worthless for what I had hoped to use it for . You cannot set the temperature alarm to *GO DOWN TO* a given temperature which is too bad . Still, this is a well built easy to use thermometer ... just not what I had hoped for.
Customer Review: Probe is very easily broken! Summary: 2 Stars
The good aspects of this thermometer are that you can attach it (by magnet) to your stove front and that you can set your target temperature and have it beep to tell you you've reached it. Of course, this is what you want in a digital thermometer.
Two problems: one is that you can't ever turn it off (unless you want to take out the battery), and so it's unnecessarily using the battery; the second is that the probe is EXTREMELY sensitive. I'm on my third probe in a few months. Do NOT use with the GRILL except to check the temperature and then take it out. You can not use it with the grill lid closed. I did not see this in the instructions anywhere. My second broke inexplicably. You'll know it's broken when the temperature will read only LOW or HIGH.
I have to get replacement probes (for $10) via mail because no local stores carry them.
So just know you must treat the probe with kid gloves and you'll be OK.
Customer Review: Great item that is very useful Summary: 5 Stars
If I could give this thermometer 4.5 stars I would.
I bought this for last Thanksgiving in order to accurately cook my turkey and it really is almost the best thing since sliced bread. It is very accurate and allows me to roast any meat in my oven to perfection. I use it a couple of times a week and have never had a problem with it. The probe is removable for ease of cleaning and the body has magnets on the back so I stick it to my fridge. I agree with the other reviewers that it would be nice if it could be turned off, but I use the timer function so frequently that it really does not matter and I have not had to replace the battery as of yet. I highly recommend this as a relatively simple way to prepare roasted meats without the hassle of guessing times and then opening the oven over and over to check your meat with an instant read thermometer. This is about 1000X better!
Customer Review: Terrific until the probe stopped working Summary: 2 Stars
I've had this under a year and used it in the oven and for candy making. The clip was handy for the candy making but it didn't really keep the probe from touching the bottom of the pan unless you angled it just so. It seemed very accurate, even correctly measuring the ambient temp of our house. I agree with other reviewers who felt an on/off switch would have been a nice feature but I would just take the 1 AAA battery out when it went into the drawer. I would just rinse the tip of the probe after each use. Recently, the probe just stopped working right. It registers 135 degrees ambient temp and 60 degrees in ice cold water. I've tried replacing with a brand new battery but no go with the inaccurate temp. I don't think I want to pay $10 for another probe if this will happen again, esp. since I've already paid $23 for the product. Time to shop for another digital thermometer!
Customer Review: Just perfect! Summary: 5 Stars
I had wanted a "good" thermometer for quite some time. My husband got me one for my birthday (he's soooooo romantic!) but it didn't have the features I was looking for. After thanking him, I asked if he minded if I search for just the "right" one. He agreed and I went shopping on Amazon. After checking out dozens of models in many price ranges I decided on the Polder Cooking Timer/Thermometer with bonus pan clip. I am so glad I took the time to hunt for just the right one. My CHRISTmas baking was so much easier this year. I don't know how I ever made lemon curd, divinity and peanut brittle before I got this! I just set the temperature and it beeps when I reach it. No guesswork here! My Christmas turkey breast what easy to monitor too. "Just perfect" is the best way to describe this thermometer. My Mom was visiting and was so impressed, I gave her one for Christmas!!
