Polder 898-95 Clock, Timer and Stopwatch, Black
Occasionally I get distracted and don't hear the microwave timer which I used to use for timing everything. I decided to try the Polder timer. I wear the cord around my neck though it is a bit long. I re-tied the knot to shorten it after a timer disaster which completely sold me on the timer.
One day while preparing apples for dehydrating, I leaned over the sink to pick up something and the timer fell into a large bowl of water. Doh! No display anymore :( I figured it was probably ruined, but hung it up near a fan to dry just to see what would happen. I'm glad I didn't immediately toss it. After about 3 days, the unit had started to run again. It lost it's clock setting (no surprise there), but a few trial runs it showed me that it seemed to be working perfectly. I'd buy this again without question.
Customer Review: Not quite what I was hoping. Summary: 4 Stars
Lets start with the positive: 3 features; Clock, "Count-Up" and Timer. It also includes a magnet on the back and a strap. The battery is easily replaced and doesn't require a screwdriver or anything like that. The timer has an auto-memory feature so that when it completes, it returns right back to the time you set it at. This is ideal for me as I bought it to have recurring 2 minute intervals for use while working out.
Now on to the negatives: Each button push releases a loud beep, and it's annoying. The "count-up" feature is the stopwatch whose smallest unit is a second (no 10th or hundredth of a second). The magnet is weak and can barely keep itself righted. There is no way to turn off the auto-memory timer.
So, nice positives and fairly insignificant negatives make me very pleased with this device. I, however, already own a fully accurate stopwatch, so the lack of tenths and hundredths in the "count-up" feature is not a big deal for me.
Customer Review: Best timer ever!!! Summary: 5 Stars
This is the best all-around timer I've ever purchased. As a caterer and baker, I have used my share of not-so-pricey to very expensive timers over the years and this is by far the easiest and most well designed I've ever used. The cord for wearing around your neck is extremely handy when you need to be handling other tasks at the same time and the magnet on the back is a great addition for keeping it in one place if you choose. It is very user friendly and even allows you to time more than one thing at a time. One of my favorite functions is the backward timing function. When the timer goes off, it automatically keeps track of how long it has been since the timer has gone off so you'll know how much time has elapsed. This is especially great for when you need to know the exact time frame for your particular oven for a particular dish, especially if it differs from the recipe instructions. I have three of these and it will now be my go-to timer of choice!
Customer Review: Needs a cover over the buttons!! Summary: 2 Stars
I got this to set timer and wear around my neck to keep track of time of whatever I am doing (surfing internet, cooking, cleaning, etc) It has NO cover over the buttons so anytime I lean against something it gets pinched in between my chest and whatever I'm leaning on and pushes all the buttons and changes the settings. Last week in church, I had it in my purse and my 5 yr old accidentally sat on my purse, well it turned it on and the stupid thing started beeping and going off -- I had to leave my seat and hunt it down in my purse. Not the end of the world but very annoying. But it really defeats the purpose of why I got it if I'm accidentally changing the settings and time on it. On the up side, it has a nice large display and thankfully it has a magnet so it is now on my refrigerator to use as a 2nd timer when I stay in the kitchen to cook. If it had a plastic sleeve to slide over it to keep from changing the buttons then it would probably be perfect.
Customer Review: Basic, simple and it works... Summary: 5 Stars
Its a workhorse. I use it all the time.
As it doesn't do much, there aren't many buttons and the display is as simple as it gets. The buttons that are there are cleanly laid out and color coded. Even without my reading glasses, I can set and read it.
Things I like:
- It will not shut up. It will beep until you deal with it.
- It counts up after it expires. You know the overrun time.
- It remembers the last time setting. Interval timing is easy.
- As it only does one thing, you don't have to worry about screwing up the settings. I had a multi-timer where I would always be cancelling ALL timers, not just the one that beeped.
- It comes in black and white. Which timer is for what is a clear as, well, black and white
- It's easy to carry around the neck or in a pocket. I love it when I am grilling.
There is nothing that I dislike about the little guy.
