Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Polder 898-95 Clock, Timer and Stopwatch, BlackCustomer Review: Good for what I need; may not be for everyone Summary: 4 Stars
I received this as a gift from a friend who knew I was looking for something to time portions of a class. The fact that it can be used to count up and count down is helpful to me. The beep is clear and loud enough for my purpose, and the clock feature comes in handy.
Not thrilled with the button battery and that fact it is always on (because of the clock feature.) I like my electronic kitchen timer in that regard (battery life,) because when it is off, it is off. I haven't changed that AAA battery in two years. The lanyard is nice, the buttons seeem a little small (maybe I just have big fingers) but they are fine as long as you are actually looking at the timer. Don't try to do it by feel!
So....this is a pretty comprehensive timer that will do a lot if you need it to. Since it was a gift, I am really enjoying it. It remains to be seen if I will replace the battery when needed and/or replace it if it breaks.
HINT: since it says not to get it wet, I keep it in a ziplock when using it in the kitchen. You can use it by pressing and viewing right through the baggie, and it prevents spatters on the timer.
Customer Review: Great timer for dealing with ADD! Probably good for the kitchen as well! Summary: 5 Stars
I have a son with ADD. You parents with kids who has such a disorder understands how home life is. A timer is one of the ways I keep my kid on track with the simplest of task.
The timer has several good design features:
- Counts up and down (although we never count up) and has a great big display.
- The buttons make a beep when push, this is great because you know when your kid has not started the timer. A good verbal reminder to start the timer followed by a beep how I know my son is going to be on task, even from the next room. The other thing is the beep alerts you when my son tries to "cheat" the system :)
- The alarm is annoying and loud but its a god sent for us. It does not just shutoff but you have to manually clear the alarm.
- It's super simple to use and the string helps my son keep it with him everywhere in the house.
I really like this timer for the simplicity and robustness (fell into a clean toilet bowl, dried it and still keeps working). I do however agree with the other reviewers about the easy pushed buttons. A small flaw I am willing to overlook for bliss at home. :)
Customer Review: 3 stars because there isn't anything better. Summary: 3 Stars
I like that I can hang this on my neck and slip it into my front pocket or shoulder sleeve pocket. I also like number buttons on a timer so I can set a precise time without the tedious up and down buttons. This one also has hours, minutes and seconds so it will do everything I need. I don't like how the numbers are labeled by the buttons. It takes some getting used to and is easy to press the wrong button because the label is halfway between two buttons. This has clock, count-up and count-down functions. It took some trial and error to figure out how to set the clock. It's also possible to accidentally bump the clear and the start/stop button when the timer is in your pocket. That screws up your whole cook or whatever you're timing. Finally, the battery clip cover is horrible. Too easy to lose and very difficult to get the battery in. The first time the internal clip was bent. It took me 5 minutes to figure out that I could re-seat it with a pen and then it worked fine. Until I find something better, this is what I'll use. Still hunting. By the way, I've spied this around the necks of professional chefs.
Customer Review: Useful, but not as durable as you would hope for. Summary: 4 Stars
My father loves this clock. He uses it as his watch because he can't wear a wristwatch.
It keeps good time, is easy to read, and the count up and count down timers are simple to use. The keypad makes setting the countdown timer extremely fast and simple. The alarm tone is very loud, and is easily heard through all but the loudest activities.
My only nitpick on this device would be that for every day use, it isn't especially durable for continuous everyday use. It generally wears out in some fashion after about 1.5 to 2 years. He has gone through a couple now, both white and black. Some of the ways my father's clocks have failed are loosing the battery door (tape fixes that), the loop for the lanyard failing, or getting the entire unit caught in something and smashed.
For normal use the way it was intended, as a wearable kitchen timer that's dirt simple to set, it should last a lot longer and is great at its job. Perfect for when you are cooking and don't want to remain near the kitchen.
Customer Review: Up, down and clock all at once Summary: 5 Stars
I kept track of how long the yogurt had been 'cooking', alerted myself when the bread was done rising and had a clock with me on the tractor concurrently. How handy is that? The timer allows for hours, which many kitchen timers don't and yogurt takes 6-8. Bread's first rise takes two, and it's easy to lose track of time when working in the garden or the back forty. This timer really meets my needs, which can often involve multiple things at once. I have kitchen timers that meet certain needs just fine, but I've not come across one that is as effective as this for other things such as being loud enough to get my attention on the noisy tractor, or from a distance outside, if I don't have it around my neck. And being able to do multiple things at once is great. It's easy to read the display and easy to set so I don't have to worry about losing the directions. The only thing I had to look at the directions for was how to set AM or PM when first setting the clock. I'm very pleased with this purchase.
