Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Polder 898-95 Clock, Timer and Stopwatch, Black

Customer Review: Great timer for many tasks
Summary: 5 Stars

Here's a tip for you regarding the need for a cover; until the manufacturer creates a cover so as not to press buttons while in your pocket, etc., you may find you have better luck if you set your timer, (or count up) and after that, press the "clock" button so that the time is displayed. Sure you'll likely press buttons accidently, but chances are it won't mess up your timer/counter, as you would have to "accidently" press the timer or counter button first, and then another.... It's not 100% foolproof, but it works for me. My husband loves this, since he's always busy and has a short attention span while grilling, always running in and out of the house, answers the phone, prepares stuff in the kitchen while food is grilling, you get the idea. This little timer keeps him a bit more focused on his grilling, and charred food has decreased dramatically :o) I also use it during the winter season when loading the woodstove, helping me not to forget to close the damper somewhat and engage the combuster, otherwise, the entire charge of wood is likely to burn wastefully away. We have a metal door (to the outside world) and sticking the timer to this door rather than in the kitchen becomes very convenient.....Great for short or long vacations; if you don't have a travel alarm, and don't need to sleep for longer than 9hours and 99 minutes, works fine, Maybe not so good for those of you who rely on a snooze button. Also great to set to remember opening times of museums, amusement parks, when the next bus/boat/train is going to leave, no need to remember to keep looking at your watch....the timer will let you know, just remember to push the clock button afer you've set your timer or counter. One drawback to this little trick; you need to actually press the timer button, then the stop/start button for the timer to stop beeping. The timer itself is good quality, easy to figure out and use, and the battery lasts for a couple of years so far......

Customer Review: Best timer ever made--so many uses!
Summary: 5 Stars

I used to use a small timer in my job as In-flight Service Manager to keep the schedules timely for meals, movies, time to close up the galleys check that passengers are strapped in and get ready for landing, etc. After losing my wonderful job when the company went bankrupt and was bought by AA, I then used it for cooking.

I was very frustrated when it died and I found that the company who made it no longer did. I explored many stores and found the Polder. It turned out to be even better--the old one had the magnetic back and the little stand but not the cord that allows it to be on your person. It is very accurate and I also use it as a timer for when to get up from a nap or from sleep during the day or night--depending on what shift I was working. All in all, it can be used for so many things and is very durable. The first one I had lasted over 20 years. I assumed that the battery was dead and got another battery, but that didn't work so I ordered two from Amazon. I opened one of them and made all the settings, but then decided to use the battery in my new one to see if the old one would come to life...it DID! There was evidently a bad battery that I had bought.

So now my old one is back on my night table and I have the two new ones for gifts for two of my sons who are nearing 50 and love to cook.

America's Test Kitchen and the magazine, Cook's Illustrated both use only this timer and highly recommend it as being the best.

The seller was very prompt, the package arrived sooner than I had expected and the packaging was excellent.

Customer Review: Fantastic, with minor problems
Summary: 4 Stars

I have previously bought two of these and plan to purchase a third. As the ADHD parent of an ADHD child, time management issues are a constant in our household and this wonderful little tool is a lifesaver. I wear it constantly (when we're out people regularly ask me if it's a new kind of cell phone!), and use all three of its functions for everything from keeping on schedule to time-outs to science/math lessons for home-schooling. Sometimes I even use it for cooking...!

I do have two problems with it, however. First, I couldn't figure out how to set the clock. It took my software quality assurance engineer husband to figure out that you have to put all of the zeros in at the end of the time when you are setting it, including the seconds. This was not sufficiently clearly explained in the directions.

Second, the two I have already purchased both broke in the same place - specifically, the little plastic ring molded into the corner of the case. This is where the lanyard attaches to the timer. On both timers the rings broke after minor trauma, one after being dropped onto a laminate floor, the other after being yanked on by my toddler daughter. The timers themselves worked fine afterwards, one even surviving a soaking in the sink. It is an surprising weakness in an otherwise tough little device.

Customer Review: Polder 898 clock setting
Summary: 4 Stars

The Polder 898 clock/timer is a neat little timer BUT! I sure wasted alot of time attempting to set the clock. The instructions are not complete. They tell you to enter the hour & minute ( with leading zeros always required ), but do not tell you it is required to also enter the seconds. Don't enter the seconds, no correct time!

When setting the clock, if you do not enter hours, minutes, and also press the zero key twice for seconds, the clock always defaults back to 12:00 AM as if you just installed the battery. Thanks to the reviewer below that posted the solution! Searching the web did not give me the answer ( including going to the Polder website ). Otherwise, I'd rate it a 5 if I had not had to waste time repeatedly trying and re-reading the instructions ( and searching the web ). My relatives love their's. Don't know how they figured out how to set the clock. Maybe they just use the timer function.

Bottom Line: Had some hassle, wasted some time, but really a great little portable clock/timer for the price. Needs improved printed instructions, but I do suggest it for cooks that tend to burn stuff, are forgetful, or are just multi-tasking.

Customer Review: I love this timer!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have ADHD, so time management is very difficult for me - I own about 6 different timers, each of which has a different function, but I end up using this one the most. I use it to keep myself on track while cleaning, cooking, or getting ready in the morning, and as a morning alarm every day - instead of hitting snooze, if I have to, I just set it for ten more minutes. The strap is very convenient, and I simply wear it around my neck when walking from room to room, without having to remember to take it with me or where I left it, or that I was trying to keep myself on track - great for a space cadet with a five-second attention span. I like the 12/24 option, as well. I've been using it every day for way over a year now, and it's none worse for the wear, though it's taken a lot of abuse :). Now that I think about it, the plastic face did come off once (after I'd dropped it on the floor 50 times), but I simply superglued it back on, and no problem since. The only cons, as some people have mentioned, is that the buttons beep loudly when you're setting the timer, and you can't carry it around in your pocket or bag since they protrude and get pushed easily.
