Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Polder 893-90 Dual Kitchen 20-Hour Timer/Clock/StopwatchCustomer Review: Cook's Illustrated: half-baked recommendation. Summary: 1 Stars
Like the other review on this page, I bought this based a "highly recommended" review from the writers/testers at Cook's Illustrated. I purchased two of these, one functioned as designed and the other malfunctioned badly: the buttons were inoperative, it would reset itself spontaneously all with an obnoxious series of beeps, and would sort of make an intermittent chirping sound when left alone. A new battery was installed but only resulted in the timer numerals being faint and barely visible. The real disappointment was that the one without the problems functioned as designed, but did so in a haphazard, compromised fashion. I shall enumerate the two what I consider to be fatal flaws with this timer.
1) When using the number scrolling function, whereupon the user holds the button to auto scroll to the number of hours, minutes or seconds desired, each new number is greeted by an obnoxious "beep" for every individual number, so if you just so happened to need a timer to count down from 23 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds, you would have to endure 141 mind-numbing beeps to set this time, that is 138 too many, and constitutes and annoying design flaw, in my opinion. 2) The "Memory" feature is a nice idea, whereupon you can preset a given time period to be counted down upon with a handy push of the "Memory" button. The problem is that the first use of a new preset results in the timer counting down from that preset amount of time, but each subsequent use of that preset results in the timer inexplicably counting up. If I wanted for the timer to count down from a preset, say 15 minutes, I'd have to hit "Memory" then add one second to that, then the timer would reliably count down from "15:01" but not "15:00". Annoying design flaw #2, in my opinion.
To top it all off, Polder's customer service is non-existent. I emailed Polder with my problem with the malfunctioning timer a couple of weeks ago and as of yet, have not received a response from them. I recently lost the functional timer and will steer clear of the Polder brand the next time around.
